pregnant at christmas - where to go

Hi.

TTC for a few months now... assuming I were pregnant at christmas time (up to 5 months) I think me and DH should go somewhere special but not too adventurous. I was thinking New Zealand rather than anywhere in South America.

We would normal go skiing with his friends / family but on the basis I wouldn't ski even if I were just pregnant I had ruled this out.

Maybe I am wrong not skiing even if we are only talking weeks not months pregnant, or maybe we should just stay at home and nest.

All hypothetical but although we would love to have a family (children) I am scared and worried about being pregnant, giving birth and the early stages of motherhood. So thinking ahead is my way of not worrying.

I wouldn't make big plans TBH, especially not for long haul trips. And especially not if you'd lose money if you cancel it.

If you're not pregnant by then, maybe book a last minute holiday.

But if you are pregnant, you don't know if you'll be really struggling with sickness or having issues (e.g. bleeding) that would mean that not only should you not fly, but would mean you won't want to go anywhere!

I went skiing earlier this year, fell terribly on one particular occasion, then got home and found out I was a few weeks pregnant...

It is not worth the worry!!!

I went to south-east Asia when 4 months pg over Christmas (from the UK). So glad we went - is so much more difficult once baby arrives! Also, first or early second trimester are ideal times to travel - by third trimester bump was too big and got so uncomfortable even for short haul sitting a plane seat (could barely sit in car for more than 1 hour). DS now 13 months and long-haul travel involves all sorts of new complications, so have still not travelled long-haul with him. So would say by all means book your vacation and enjoy the long-haul travel while you can! If you're worried, take out travel cancellation insurance in case you're feeling too bad to travel or have medical reasons (and make sure it covers pregnancy)

I don't think I would plan a trip to somewhere like New Zealand tbh. If you were in the first trimester and puking daily, you might not want a flight that long and you might want to just lie on a beach. I did the latter - we went to Egypt when I was about 6-7 weeks (booked it because I had just had a mc, didn't expect to get pg again so quickly!), and a 5 hr flight was long enough, was retching all the way home, but the actual holiday was great. But to go all the way to NZ would be a bit of a waste imo. Having said that, I went to LA in the 1st trimester last time round, but I did cry on the flight! Also, we had been before so I wasn't sightseeing etc.

I agree, just book something closer to the time.

thank you domestic, pink, anything and japh... we won't book now and will keep an open mind as to what will work for us depending on if, how many weeks and the effects on me.

the hardest concept thinking about taking the step to becoming / being a parent is that most of the time there is no definite answer to a host of dilemmas

i guess that is what makes parenthood such a joy / rollercoaster

anyway, i will stop this musing and go and see if DH is still awake!

Vienna! Go and enjoy Vienna. Christmas markets, snow (sometimes) beautiful scenery. Plus, they have the most wonderful mulled wine and rum punch stalls...... ask for the 'kinderwein' or the 'kinderpunsch' and it is entirely alcohol free but still SO delicious that you do not feel deprived.

Hot chestnuts..... baked potato stalls.

Glorious.
