Changing Bags

Hello,

I am wondering if I can just use a normal large handbag as a changing bag, if I buy a changing mat and bottle holder thing to go in it. I am thinking of just buying a really nice Mulberry Tote and using that instead and just buying a small zip bag or something to throw in it which can hold everything.

I just don't want to waste money on a bag I don't really need. I would rather put the moeny towards a nice new handbag that i can then use for going out and work etc.

Doable?

Thanks

yes of course you can

I find one of those fold up change mats with pockets thus or similar handy to swap from bag to bag - in fact you often get them free ont he front of parenting magazine,s so keep your eyes open.

Excellent thanks! I figure as long as the bag is big enough for me to load all my crap in it will be fine.

just make sure you have some way of hanging it on the pushchair - if you have a 'bar' handle one of these might be handy

You can always get the free boots baby club one (you just buy a pack of nappies) for the first 6-12 months and then get a nice bag for toddlerhood. Not worth getting a good one as it is likely to get milk/sick etc on it. The free one is fine and functional with change bag, insulated pocket, messy bag etc, loads of people have it, it lasted me a good 10 months before it fell apart.

details here

when i was childminding i used a whinnie the pooh school bag from argos - i'm planning on using that again with my own baby! there is no point buying a top of the range hyped up bag to carry nappies, a change of clothes, a toy and a bottle imho

MrsBadger · 08/07/2010 14:12

I have a patent leather one and find the sick wipes off much more easily than the Boots one
also meams I don't carry a separate handbag as well

emmyloo2 · 08/07/2010 14:13

Ok, thanks.

Jellybeans - do you think if I used a good bag it will be ruined with sick etc? I must admit, I hadn't thought of that. The free Boots one sounds good. I am a member of the Boots baby club so i will look into it.

Maybe I should just get myself a nice handbag just for myself!

the only bags I have ever ruined were down to spilt foundation and exploding yoghurt... both pre kids

emmyloo2 · 08/07/2010 14:20

Oh yes, the inside of my handbags are covered in crap - makeup, diet coke, highlighter, pen etc....

See I like the idea of not carrying a separate handbag!

oh and mines machiene washable as well, comes in very handy!

jellybeans · 08/07/2010 14:32

Unless you get machine washable it may get wrecked!! (By others kids as well as your own ). Mostly by food and milk and by being constantly put down on clinic/library floors while you change baby or stretched over a buggy.

Also you will be sick of a big 'changing style' bag and will want a smaller one eventually. It's so nice being able to buy a 'normal' size bag for yourself again after lugging a big change bag around for a year or two.

This is what I'm doing. I have the freebie Boots one to leave stocked up in the car for emergencies, and then I have a small across body Roxy bag for when I'm out and about. I figure this will work for short trips. For longer trips I will just use a big handbag, when I'm using a sling/wrap I will use a fairly large leather across body bag I think.

Then I am planning on treating myself to a nice big handbag (another one ). i would like to strap it over the handlebars on the pram, but if not a hook will do. TK Maxx have some lovely handbags at the moment, some brilliant bargains on some lovely leathers.
