Eating too much?

Hello all,

I am concerned that I am eating too much. Someone at work is pregnant with twins and was shocked by the amount I'm eating so wanted to post on here and see if anyone could let me know if what I am eating sounds too much so I can try and adjust. I'm just coming up to 15 weeks

Breakfast: 2 slices of brown toast,no spread with cheese

Morning snack: 1 banana and 1 peach, a cheese sandwich no spread on brown bread (2 slices of bread)

Lunch: 1 bag of hula hoops, another cheese sandwich (as described above), a yoghurt, a piece of fruit

Afternoon snack: 2/3 rice cakes and sometimes another piece of fruit

After work: Cheese on toast (brown)

Dinner: Mash potatoe, veg, cheese source and either meat or fish. Usually ice-cream and strawberries for pudding.

Thanks for any comments, and sorry such a long post. Almost forgot 1/2 small packs of fruit gums too

Are you having bad morning sickness? I found that the only thing that got rid of my nausea was carbs, and lots of them, and it looks like you'r ethe same. Lots of bread and potatoes. I'm pretty much of the 'eat whatever the hell you want' camp when I'm pregnant, but I have been left with a hell of a lot of weight to shift after both my pregnancies (4 stone both times ) and though I've managed to lose it both times, it's a slog. If nausea isn't an issue, I think you'd do well to swap some of the more carb heavy stuff for some protein.

Yes I was having bad morning sickness but it has eased up so now sick only once a week rather than every day. I've been off milk due to a morning sickness incident, but perhaps i should try cereal again in the morning to cut out one set of sandwiches. Any advise of protein snacks? Thanks

Hi there Berrycravings - you are on the same antenatal forum as me I think. I can easily match you on the eating front, I had terrible nausea as well and find I get hungry to the point of feeling sick and have to eat (usually bread or potatoes) quickly. I find I eat quickly but am full quickly - but then hungry again not that much later. I don't know about you but I hate eating so much and being so hungry all the time.... Assume baby is one greedy li'l customer!!

LouM10 · 07/07/2010 20:36

I'll tell you what, you're eating less than me haha. Some days I hardly eat and I'm full, others, I'm stuffing my face all day. Luckily I'm quite tall so I have to put on a lot of weight before it shows. Just dreading getting it all off afterwards hehe

Chynah · 07/07/2010 21:15

You don't need any extra caories until 3rd tri an the only abut 300 a day, however with morning sickness it does seem to help to eat litte & often so you are not alone there - maybe try for some lower calorie snacks if you're worried about putting on too much weight too soon (know it's no where near as satisfying as stodge though!)

OnlyWantsOne · 07/07/2010 21:35

Eat what you like, but be prepared to have to make the effort to loose it all again after...

I was so starving hungry for the first 15 weeks that I would sit and eat, and eat and eat all day...

Now im at 19 weeks, Ive put on a stone so far - and I feel fine, not as starving, but still very hungry all day long

tiredfeet · 07/07/2010 21:59

is it like that every single day though? I have days when I am ravenously hungry, one day I had eaten three breakfasts (bowls of cereal/ toast) between 6am -9am . However, other days my appetite is just normal and I don't need extra snacks/ meals at all.

Also I guess how much food you need depends on how much exercise you're having, I'm making sure I get exercise every day (just walking / swimming) and haven't expanded anywhere except my bump (26 weeks)

Kiwiinkits · 09/07/2010 04:47

Hi Berry,

I agree that you should 'up' your protein intake. I'm a big fan of boiled eggs (I take 2x into work for part of my lunch), or instead of toast for breakfast try a good old fashioned porrige. Porrige has low GI so that full feeling lasts.

Try not to worry too much about how much you're eating, as the foods you are having are all very healthy. Try to keep exercising to maintain your strength/tone.

How many weeks are you?

Cheers

Kiwiinkits · 09/07/2010 04:48

oh sorry I just saw that you're 15 weeks.

Tarlia · 09/07/2010 07:41

I think it might be a good idea to substitue some of the cheese, it really isn't that healthy.

The doctor was keen to make sure I was eating enough calcium as I don't drink milk - he said one portion of yogurt and a couple of slices of cheese per day was what I should be eating.

The all day sickness is just horrid, isn't it.

Elsa123 · 09/07/2010 09:50

Although you don't need more calories until your 3rd Trimester I found that to be rubbish. Pre-pregnancy, I could have a bowl of cereal in the morning, a snack bar at 10, go to circuits at lunchtime and not eat my lunch until 2ish which was one sandwich without butter with some fruit then dinner at around 1830 which included pudding- anything from fruit/yoghurt to something like crumble if I fancied it.

When I fell pregnant, there was no way I could do the same without fainting and, for the first 16 weeks I was continually hungry. Now, i have to have a bigger bowl of cereal in the morning (and have swapped from special k to bran flakes...I'm sure you can guess why ) and toast with butter and marmalade and I'm hungry at about 10 (breakfast at 0630). I have with me at work normally, lots of fruit, yoghurt, a flapjack, a sandwich single no butter. when I get home I need a snack and then have dinner at about 2000 when my DH now gets back from work.

NewbieT · 09/07/2010 10:02

I wouldn't worry about the amount you're eating too much, it's natural you'll eat more, but sometimes feeling hungry can indicate the body needs something specific, not the calries but maybe a specific vitamin - sometimes during my period I used to crave Guinness, for example (that's my reason why anyways and I'm sticking to it ) in your case maybe you need more calcium as you're wanting to eat a lot of cheese? I'd try drinking more milk?

Just a thought, I'm no nutritionist!

sonsmum · 09/07/2010 10:09

what you are eating is absolutely fine!!!
and don't feel you need to substitute the cheese at all.
Most people feel the most hungry in the few few weeks....when your body is doing so much work.
Do what your body is telling you to.....though that should not mean endless pies/cakes etc....
You'll probably find your appetite leaves you a little close to the birth.

And don't compare yourselves to others and what they eat, twins or otherwise, you are you and they are they.

Some people use prgenancy as an excuse to eat loads (healthy or otherwise) and others try to diet as are more worried of their post birth figure than their babies needs.

daisystone · 09/07/2010 10:14

I think your diet sounds fine apart from the cheese! Not that cheese is bad, but you do seem to like it a lot! Try some nuts and seeds as a snack mid-morning and mid-afternoon. Or some houmous with your rice cakes.

I am 21 weeks and trying not to weigh myself at all and just judge what is right by what I see in the mirror. I actually lost half a stone in the first trimester as my morning sickness was horrific but I know that I have definitely put that weight back on in the last few weeks.

I was very unhealthy in my first trimester as nothing was appealing to me and vegetables made me wretch, so now I am trying to eat much more healthily - but I still have ice-cream and chocolate and all that good stuff!

Thanks for all your feedback. Really helpfull. Its so easy to worry when you read the 'healthy eating in pregnancy section' in the books! Have cut down the amount of sandwiches in the day and have managed to trade one set for cearal in the mornings and that keeps me full for longer. Is nice not to be eating quite so much carbs .

The more days that go by the better I feel which is great as there are so many more types of food I fancy again so hopefully will be able to try some of the suggestions.
