I am 15 weeks and sooo exhausted for most of the day but get quite desperate around 3ish, when my 12 month old wants to play!

How bad is it to have a cup of tea every day to keep me awake til DD's bedtime? I am usually very cautious in pregnancy, wouldn't drink coffee but will a little caffine hit every afternoon have much effect on the babe?

Does anyone have any other suggestions to keep me awake, please?!

Thanks!

Yes of course it's fine to have a cup of tea! Enjoy it and don't worry.

MoonUnitAlpha · 07/07/2010 13:28

You can safely have 200mg of caffeine a day - roughly equivalent to 2 cups of tea, a large mug of filter coffee or about 5 cans of coke iirc.

RooBear · 07/07/2010 13:35

I have about 5 cups a day and I'm nearly 6 months pg. I wouldn't function without it!

emmyloo2 · 07/07/2010 13:37

God I hope so because I have about 6 cups a day! And some diet coke!!! I am 22 weeks and the baby is perfectly healthy.

NHS caffeine guidelines here

"The amount in food and drink will vary, but as a guide each of these contains roughly 200mg or less of caffeine:

Two mugs of instant coffee (100mg each)
One mug of filter coffee (140mg each)
Two mugs of tea (75mg each)
Five cans of cola (up to 40mg each)
Two cans of 'energy' drink (up to 80mg each)
Four (50g) bars of plain chocolate (up to 50 mg each). Caffeine in milk chocolate is about half that of plain chocolate"

PJen · 07/07/2010 13:45

upto 4-5 cups of tea and 2-3 cups of coffee are absolutely fine. There are loads of researchs done on this and you can check by googling. Don't worry too much...

Beegey · 07/07/2010 14:04

Righto, thanks chaps. I had seen the NHS guidelines, it seems like an awful lot, but I am quite sensitive to caffeine anyway, cup of filter coffee makes me feel a bit loopy!

Will remove matchsticks from eyelids and go directly to put the kettle on...

If I can't have alcohol then I have to have tea and coffee!
I have two cups of either in the morning and then sometimes a third later on.
In the first trimester when I was severely sick with morning sickness, tea was sometimes the only thing I could manage. Then I go massive cravings for coffee.

Be sensible about it. All these guidelines were not in place 50 years ago, how did people manage to have babies then? I hate the way people scaremonger. Obviously don't drink buckets full of caffeine but get things into perspective!

RoxyLady · 07/07/2010 15:25

Ive had tea everyday... although for some reason milk is making me sick now so I cant today Ive kept nothing down after my daily tea

missdt · 07/07/2010 16:26

It makes me shake so I avoid it but I am loving the smell of coffee. Mmmmmmmmm. I've always liked the smell more than drinking it but it's got more intense in pregnancy.

vmcd28 · 07/07/2010 17:31

and buy some decaf teabags (Sains own brand really do taste the same as normal tea) to have during the rest of the day

emmyloo2 · 07/07/2010 17:36

Yeah I use decaf teabags when I remember and drink decaf coffee as well.

I think caffeine intake is the least of my worries at the moment. I am more focused on making it through the next 18 weeks and after....

Beegey · 07/07/2010 18:10

Thanks for the suggestion but I wont be buying decaf as the whole point is that I need the caf bitas feel so whacked! Not too fussed about tea otherwise, prefer rooibos.

Good luck with the next 18 weeks Emmyloo2. And after.

You shouls try the decaf, tho, cos when I got to about 18 weeks I started wanting more cups of tea than I had done up till then, plus do you really notice the difference with just one cup of tea? Tea doesnt even have a huge amount of caffeine in it!

Beegey · 07/07/2010 21:44

Sounds nuts I know, but yes I really do! Could all be in my head but a cup of English Breakfast and a biccie seems to do the job. Maybe I should try and outfox myself with a decaf!

buy some, and get your DP to make you tea each time, and tell him to slip in a cup of decaf one day, to see if you notice
