cyclizine - anyone tried it?

Have just got a pescription for cyclizine for ms having tried avomine which didn't really help. I've just read the leaflet in the tablets and it's totally freaked me out with how strong it sounds (eg taken for sickness in cheomotherapy). Some reassurance from people that have tried it would be great, as I'm worried I'm going to do something terrible to my baby by taking it, but I can't go on with this terrible nausea. I'm only 7 weeks, so chances are I'll have to take this for a few weeks to come. Anyone used it?

Used it short-term once for non-pregnancy nausea brought on by another medication I was taking at that time. (Not chemo!!!) Really did the job for me. Sorry you are having a tough time!

gateacre1 · 05/07/2010 20:18

Hi I used it during my last pregnancy and my 2 year is upstairs right now and perfectly fine, well except for the tantrums !!
I have been taking it this pregnancy since 5 weeks as the hyperemesis kicked in again
I combined the tablets with acupuncture and now I only take 1 tablet in the afternoon when the nausea becomes too difficult to bear

Hope the cyclizine works for you, this time round I found that constantly snacking on mints, bread sticks, crackers etc helped the nausea
hope you feel better soon

I tried it on second pregnancy after struggling through the first pregnancy being sick for 9 months.

For me it didn't take away the nausea but it did help lessen the vomiting.

It made me feel awful though - really spaced out.

Luckily on my second pregnancy the hyperemesis disappeared at 13 weeks so I didn't take the medication for long.

DD2 is a perfectly healthy 20 month old now.

beeny · 05/07/2010 20:26

I was sick for whole 9 months in first pregnancy and in second was the same so took it at 31 weeks. My brother a doctor said if you cld wait till 12 weeks its prob better. Both mine are fine.

ceasar04 · 05/07/2010 20:35

Just started on cyclazine after 8 weeks on metroclopramide which was given to me in hosptial.
Consultant said both are safe to take in pg along with several others.

There is a Hyperemesis thread in pregancy if you want to join us for any support. Hope it kicks in soon, tbh its not doing me any favours at the moment!!

GoldenGreen · 05/07/2010 20:40

Took it from week 5 to about week 16 and it stopped the vomiting almost completely but didn't take away the nausea. I also felt a bit spaced out at times and very tired.

Stickhasgrownup · 05/07/2010 20:48

I'm nearly 32 weeks and have been taking it since 6 weeks.
I was on 3 pills a day until 23 weeks. Then cut down to 2 pills and since about 27 weeks I only take it first thing.
I also have a 4 1/2 year old dd and I took it when I had her from about 8 weeks until 20 weeks (sickness worse this time) and she's absolutely fine in every way.
So I am really not worried about the side effects to the baby this time. Although it does completely knock you out! Mind you I felt so awful for the first 20 weeks of this pregancy I was quite happy to be asleep much of the time!
As others have said, for me it didn't take away the feelings of nausea, but stopped me from actually vomitting much of the time. From about 20 weeks it did also help keep the feelings of nausea at bay too.
Good luck and don't feel bad taking them... its better that you can eat and function for you and for the baby inside you.

angels1-how weird, just spoke about this on Feb 2011 thread - was prescribed cyclazine today and not sure about taking it, the actual throwing up tmi doesn't bother me - had it before!! but this feeling of constant nausea is dreadful, didn't have it in previous pregnancies. If cyclazine doesn't help with that then I think I'm going to hold off for a while, I also can't afford the drowsiness, have 2 small dc at home and husband working nights, and a p/t job!!

Kity · 05/07/2010 21:48

I had shocking ms with DS1 all through the 9 months and the only thing that gave me respite was cyclizine.
I didn't take it throughout the whole pregnancy just occasionally and for a few weeks at a time and that was enough for me to build up some energy again.
HTH

isoldeone · 05/07/2010 21:56

my hyperemesis was so bad stemetil, cyclizine didnt touch it. Around 20 weeks i was given buccastem which is placed under the lip. I have a healthy bouncy 10 month old!

merlin8878 · 05/07/2010 22:03

Had it with DD2 as I couldn't cope with the constant sickness and nausea. I wasn't eating so was passing out quite often. Shes now 3 and it doesn't seem to have done her any harm.

I'd never heard of hyperemsis until I was told thats what I'd got this time around (DC3)
Have been taking it since 15 weeks, now 29 weeks. I'm at the point now that I only take it when I need to.

For me, although it really eased the sickness and nausea with both pgs, it totally wiped me out after taking it. But personally I'd rather feel like that than how I did before.

Hope it works for you and don't feel bad for taking it.

stripeyknickersspottysocks · 05/07/2010 22:12

I used it from 11 weeks to 40 weeks pregnant and that was 10 years ago. So its been about a long ttime and is used a lot in pregnancy.

stripeyknickersspottysocks · 05/07/2010 22:14

I did have to be signed off work for the whole pregnancy though as it made me so sleepy. Also it didn't totally cure the nausea or sickness, however it did make it better than before.

monkeycat · 05/07/2010 22:43

I was prescribed Cyclazine when I was pg with DD1 but had to stop taking it because it made me so sedated . Most anti-emetic medications are basically sedative so you will get that side effect to some degree with all of them .

I went on to try Stematil , Metraclopramide , Buccasten and finally Ondansatron (Zofran) so there are plenty options if one doesn't agree with you .

Ondansetron was the only one that touched it for me .I could not have got through my 2nd pregnancy without it .

I have 2 remarkably healthy little girls .

Hope you are feeling better soon .

Hevster · 06/07/2010 08:34

I have been taking it since 12 weeks and it wa s brilliant up until a few weeks ago when it stopped working! it is one of the drugs that builds up so don't expect instant results and if it makes you feel tired or spaced out stick with it as that lessens after a week or so as your body gets used to it

Rocklover · 06/07/2010 09:06

I was on Cyclizine for months in my last pregnancy and it really did the trick. DD is 5 now and is VERY healthy and happy, so I would say go for it.

angels1 · 06/07/2010 09:18

thanks, took my first one last night and touchwood OK so far. My dose is 3 tablets a day, but I'm not sure if I need to do this as a 'build up' effect as hevster suggests, or if I should try to limit it to 1 when needed. Any advice as to what worked for you??

OP posts:
Hevster · 06/07/2010 10:05

As I understand it you can have up to 3 a day, I started with 1 first thing (and then went back to bed) and tried not to eat for a hr or so afterwards. Somethimes I found I needed another mid afternoon and sometimes I didn't. Why don't you try having one when you get up and then have another if and when you start to feel crap again.

incidently I did start by having them randomly when i felt really bad but they wern't very effective like that, much better to stop the sickness first thing rather than try and fight it when it is already there

Stickhasgrownup · 06/07/2010 11:10

I started taking them breakfast, lunch and supper. I would begin to feel queezy at these times which reminded me to take the next one. When I cut back I went without the lunch time one first as I stopped feeling like I needed it... would sometimes then take the suppertime one mid afternoon, but that was ok.

I was told there effect was pretty instant... either you feel the benifit or you don't.

angels1 · 06/07/2010 11:58

thanks stick. Have taken 2 doses now and touch wood so far so good, just hope it keeps working, not like the last med that only seemed to work for a couple of days.

Still having to eat often too though or feel very odd/start the feelings of sickness. It would be wonderful if this worked and allowed me to feel normal enough to consider venturing out of the house I managed to hang up the washing outside this morning without having to sit down in oddness, which was great, but I can't yet put it all down to the meds - it could just be a rare good day...

I too will never be a thin pregnant woman I think - I'm only week 7 but have already but on about 5 pounds, which I know is far more than I should, but if I don't eat I feel terrible. I'm not eating particularly bad stuff, just having to eat every hour or so.
