Is it harmful not to wear a bra during pregnancy?

I am finding all bras uncomfortable - have been measured and tried lots of different sizes - just finding it uncomfortable after a couple of hours. I have medium-large boobs (size C/D). My question is it it harmful not to wear a bra for the whole pregnancy? It's much more comfortable for me not too - will this make them droopier in due course or is that nothing to do with your bra? Any other reasons why I should wear one?

you can get stretch marks if you dont have your boobs properly supported as they grow.
I found from about 20 weeks, if I didn
t wear a bra during the night I would get really bad backache.

Have you tried maternity bras? They have no underwire and I loved them during my first pregnancy. This time I am only 8 weeks but finding my old bras very uncomfortable. I am also a DD too so I can't go braless.

I didn't wear one much, mainly just for work. No particularly unusual effects. I felt more comfortable with one at work though as they swelled to an E and feel a bit on show.

Do whatever feels comfortable. Your tits will not fall off if you don't wear a bra (I don't like bras and hardly ever wear one, I rarely wore one when PG up until the very end).

DomesticG0ddess · 05/07/2010 10:13

There are a lot of stretchy top/bras around, they are generally called sleep bras I think. Not a real bra, more like a cropped vest top, but they do offer some support - they might help?

As for any other reasons - purely aesthetic, but you do look better with a good fitting bra (so all the magazines tell me!)!!

No you don't have to wear a bra....as long as you don't mind your boobs being around your knees by the end of the pregnancy

japhrimel · 05/07/2010 11:10

The more you support them, the less weight is on the skin (as boobs have very little structural support themselves) so the less the skin will stretch. Doesn't mean you won't get stretch marks or sagging boobs, but at least if you wear a bra, you're doing what you can to lessen the impact.

A well fitted bra should not be uncomfortable, unless you have a specific health problem that makes it so. A lot of places don't measure well and an ill fitting bra will almost always be uncomfortable! As you're probably a D cup, I'd recommend going to Bravissimo and trying a soft cup bra from them.

Sleep bras are great but don't offer much support.

I've been wearing secret support vest tops instead of bras. I always used to wear them pre pregnancy when my boobs were fairly small - I found Gap ones to be the best and most supportive. I've been wearing them throughout my pregnancy too (25 weeks) and have found them really comfy and supportive enough - including in bed at night.

Got a bit of a shock at the weekend, though. Went to Elle McPherson for a couple of maternity bras because I've bought a few wrap tops and dresses that I can't wear the vest tops under and was measured as an F cup! Whilst the bras purportedly fit me properly, they really aren't that comfy and so I'l be sticking with the vest tops whenever the rest of my outfit allows! I haven't found that I've suffered from any drooping or stretch marks so far.

After a bit of discomfort with my normal bras I went braless for a bit... but I thought I dtarted to look saggy. So, I bought a Bravado bra on a recommendation and it's brilliant, so comfortable and stretchy!

I'm not a big bra fan too and wish I looked like Sigourney in alien but alas am a size F in pregnancy. I wear a bra if I'm out walking a lot but mostly wear the springy vests from Mama and Papas which give some support but are super comfy too, and currently half price at £4 each!

I do a breast exercise which is putting your hands in the praying position and tensing (hard to explain) which I hope helps with some future saggy-ness.

Im a dd-e cup and I am so uncomfortable in bras even sports and maternity bras! I do sometimes go without but I quite like my boobs where they are and want them to stay there as long as poss. So I just put up with it most of the time! (I must add that I onky ever go braless at night in my own home with no dcs about!)

fattymcfatfat · 20/01/2015 00:32

Don't bother to complete the survey (linked to remain are this 5 yo thread) unless you are prepared to leave your initials on it (OK, I know we could all lie, but as I won't that's 10 minutes of my life I won't get back)

Also, if survey author is reading this, you need to tweak q19 so there is a 'don't know and don't care because I'll never buy one' option.

sleepybee · 20/01/2015 08:22

M&S nursing bras are amazing also mother care cross over sleep bras are good too. I don't wear bra to bed, but will have to when I'm breast feeding (I assume) over wise there will be leaks everywhere. Also some people start leaking before the birth & imagine you were out with no bra on eek nightmare! ConfusedShock

luckiestgirlintheworld · 20/01/2015 08:50

I never wore one in my pregnancy and still don't. I hate them. I just wear vest tops. I'm not particularly saggy but I expect I probably will be when I'm older. That's what everyone tells me anyway. (I'm about a D cup by the way, and bigger when pregnant and breastfeeding)

bellaboo88 · 20/01/2015 09:10

Just to suggest to research person...I'm suffering from rib flare. Bought new bigger bra, needed an extension thing on the back due to my ribs being pushed out.

No bras are comfy
