Hi I am pregnant with my 2nd child. I was huge with dd(5) but not as huge as i am now!
From about 28 weeks onwards i have consistently measured big, but final straw has to be measuring at 43weeks!!
I have a scan tomorrow (34weeks) and i am so fed up.
Has anyone else been this big and still gone to term?

Hi, i'm carrying twins and therefore measuring big anyway, but when i went for my 28 week scan they said both babies are individually bigger than a singleton would be at this stage. EEK! They sent me for a GTT test and i have just been diganosed with gestational diabetes. I am now 30 weeks and i look bigger than any normal person would be at 9 months. My first baby was 9lb 12oz and i wasn't as big as this. I have a very abnormal looking bump- it defies gravity. It is getting harder and harder to walk, get up, sit down, everything and i still have at least 8 weeks to go. I measured my bump weeks ago and it was 45cm, i reckon it must be over 50 now. Have they offered you a gtt test?

minkulus · 04/07/2010 22:59

Hi Sassy! I had GTT test and have had numerous blood tests etc as they thought i must have diabetes, but no just a huge bump!
I also have a wierd bump, its so high up!
Sorry to hear you are suffering, walking is a nightmare and never mind trying to sit!
i just wish i knew what to expect re timings - i have been convinced labour had started every day for the last 2 weeks. I am driving myself and my family mad! the MW reckons its because there is so much pressure, that apparantly my uterus is irritable. Just what i need, a bloody grumpy womb.

I had a huge bump, but I just carried very very out front. He was 8lb 7 so not huge considering the bump I had.

5DollarShake · 05/07/2010 10:59

I have been measuring 2 weeks ahead ever since they started taking fundal height measurements and have just gone down to one week ahead.

I measured huge for DS1 and had the GTT test, extra scan, etc and then when he came out he was a very modest 6lb 13oz. My placenta was huge and I had masses of amniotic fluid, so I'm guessing that's what accounted for my massive bump.

I feel even bigger this time, so will be interested to see how big DC2 actually is.

vicbar · 05/07/2010 12:37

Ive grown 4cm in one week and now 37 weeks and measureing 46cm so another scan today. DD 1 was 9lb 12(40wks), DS 7lb 6oz (36wks) and DD 2 9lb 13oz (38wks) so Im not suprised but they still insist on the diabetes test etc. Im really hoping when I go today I can persuade them to induce mw Ive really had enough, The bump is defying gravity and my pelvis/ back feels like its falling apart.
On the plus side for some reason Ive put on the least amount of weight with this pg (must have reduced the calorie content of Maltesers) at 2.5 stone.

cinnamongreyhound · 05/07/2010 12:46

Hope the scan goes ok today. I measured 3 weeks over with DS for most of my pregnancy and he was 8lb 12oz at 42 weeks.

This time they have changed the guidlines and although I don't weigh more than I did when pregnant last time they like women with a BMI of 35 or above at booking to have GTT and extra growth scans. Was measuring 3 weeks over at 28 weeks and have a scan on Thursday so will hopefully get a better idea, although the consultant did say that they are not very accurate and I have read that they can be up 2lb out either way!

GTT came back normal so no reason there that the baby will be big, I'm hoping he's within the normal range so I don't have too much interferance during labour!

girlsyearapart · 05/07/2010 12:54

I have been measuring 1 or 2 cm over since about 28 wks.

Had the gtt (negative)and growth scan and at wk 32 was measuring 35cm then following wk measured 1cm over

Bit sceptical about the whole thing really as have been told they 'only really worry about small babies' (well let them push it out then!)

Also been told they only worry if you're more than 2cm over but when I was 3cm over was told that it was 'probably just a big baby' duh..

Now almost 36 wks and huge bump, I know I'm over 36 cm. Dd1 was 8lb5 at 40 wks and dd2 was 9lb at 38+2 so I know this baby will be big yet none of the professionals seem to care.
vicbar if you get anywhere with the early induction let me know what you said to convince them cos I'm totally fed up too.

cinnamongreyhound · 05/07/2010 13:17

That's really weird girlsyearapart as they want to induce me early if my growth scans show I'm having a big baby. This is my problem as I was induced with DS due to being overdue and really don't want to be again, especially early as they are less likely to end ina natural delivery.

It's not necessarily true that a larger baby is harder to give birth to and unless you have a particularly small pelvis it can often be easier providing you are not laying on your back.

What measurement did your growth scan come back with?

KnitterNotTwitter · 05/07/2010 14:11

I was 2cm over on the fundal height for the majority of my pregnancy with DS. They talked about extra scans and things but that never happened in the end.

Final result was that he was 10 lb and 6oz at 40 weeks.... so just a big one!! Came out no trouble though - 7hrs from first twinge to first cuddle

girlsyearapart · 05/07/2010 17:33

cinnamon the scan at 28 wks estimated weight at 3lb. Sonographer was very odd and registrar very vague so didn't get much follow up though.

The only indication I had that dd2 was going to be big was when I went for a midwife apt the day before she was born and the midwife felt my tummy then said 'That is a big baby and it's coming very soon'

That was with a midwife covering for my usual one who is really rather rubbish imo.

I didn't have a difficult birth with dd2 though- waters broke without warning, she was born 3 hours later.

The only problem I have is that I have M.S which can make me very fatigued and I dread the thought that I get too tired from pushing and they give me a cs. (had episiotomy and ventouse with dd1 for same reason)

knitter blimey that's a big'un!

cinnamongreyhound · 05/07/2010 18:37

But I was told by my midwife that DS was going to be 10lb+ towards the end of my pregnancy and he was only 8lb 12 at 2 weeks overdue so I don't put much faith in it!

From what I have read the average for 28 weeks is 2.5lbs, so doesn't sound massive to me. Just interested really, not sure what kind of measurement they will give me or even if they can plot it on a graph like they do once the baby is born.

Inductions have a 1/3rd chance of ending in cs at the hospital I had DS in anyway and would really like to experience a natural delivery without lots of monitoring and intervention this time.

vicbar · 05/07/2010 18:53

girlyearapart no luck with the induction just said he'd found an amniotic band but doesnt think its interferring with baby.
He did put on my notes that it was a 'very well grown baby'
I dont mind that she's big tbh the DD births were easier than the DS and they fed slept better too.
One of the reasons Ive had eztra scans is because the cord isnt functioning fully and they said it was very likely she would be small and early {hmm} how big would she have been if the cord was working ?
Ive got the MW tom so Im going to beg for a sweep.

minkulus · 05/07/2010 21:01

Hello again everyone! Sorry to have started a thread then scarpered, but had a rough day!
Been in lots of discomfort today and had growth scan this afternoon.....well the good news is the amount of fluid i have has not increased, but bad(?) news is the baby is big and getting bigger by the minute (or so it seems!).
as i said in OP i was measuring at 43cm, that has now gone up to 46. The baby was estimated at 4lbs 6 just 3 weeks ago and from todays measurements at 7lb 10. If that rate of growth carries on I am having a christmas turkey, not a baby! DH helpfully calculated in car on way home "blimey minks, looks like it could be a 12 pounder"! err thanks hubby, just what i need to hear!

mink don't you love the 'helpful' comments from the husbands during pregnancy

vicbar shame about your induction, thought you may hold the magic key about what to say!

My midwife and consultant have both said no sweep before 40 wks.

cinnamon according to them the growth scan was not showing baby as being too big but with both dds being a good size and measuring big this time I'd be suprised if it was a small baby really..

Not keen on the idea of induction either though - very scared of the thought and would be devastated if I had to have a cs.

Fingers crossed the baby just comes early of its own accord.

minkulus · 06/07/2010 10:14

Hi Girlsyearapart,
my medicos dont seem to give a hoot that the baby is big and i've got lots of fluid - they too are of the lets just wait and see school!
I can barely walk or breath and have been sleeping sitting up for the last 3 weeks, but not an ounce of concern!!
i wonder if its different health areas have different policies?
However, i dont really want them to bring the baby early as i was induced at 41+3 with my dd and it was awful.....but, i am worried for this baby as it seems to squirm around so much when i am in certan positions, that it feels like its trying to get out

OP posts:
girlsyearapart · 06/07/2010 17:59

well I'll let you know how much I measure tomorrow and how early/late this baby is!

36 wks tomorrow

vicbar · 06/07/2010 18:08

girlsyearapart - no luck with sweep either apparently they arent allowed to do it unitl you 40 wks. Suggested Curry and sex (such a man made old wifes tale why do we fall for it ?).

Minkulus apparently this DD has grown nearly 1 lb in a week and thats with a very poorly working umbilical cord. Dont worry too much about the birth seriously its VERY unusual to ahve a baby thats too big to deliver and in those cases is usually the position not the size thats the issue.

Good luck everyone with our little Buddhas.

legallyblond · 06/07/2010 18:19

Just to say, I have the opposite problem (measuring 4 weeks to small) but when I was talking to my Mum last night, she told me that when she gave birth to one of my brother, the woman in the bed next to her had naturally delivered a 13lb baby! No tearing. No such thing as too big to deliver apparently...

Odd that your docs are not concerned about you measuring big - they have made a hoo ha about me measuring small!

girlsyearapart · 07/07/2010 07:48

legally must be true what I was told about them being more concerned about small measurements rather than big ones then!

What are they planning on doing?

minkulus · 07/07/2010 10:39

Hi there everyone! Update on fatty baby!
Was in hospital for monitoring last night as the little so and so was not moving at all for a good few hours......Thankfully all is well. Baby has nice strong heartbeat etc and of course was doing cartwheels and showing off in front of medical team
However Gynae doctor and registrar were concerned by size and amount of fluid and have pushed forward my next consultant appointment to this week, with dark mutterings about method of delivery and sizes of babies etc.....ooh err!
Will keep you updated!

JaMmRocks · 07/07/2010 10:46

I was measuring large with DS2 last year, had GTT, growth scans etc. The consultant didn't seem bothered by size, she said they only really like to know if babies aren't growing. DS2 was 8lb 4 oz at 38+2, I was induced, but because of pre eclampsia rather than size. It was a very speedy process for me.

Good luck!
