dreamgenii - is it worth it?

OK, so I know there was a tread about support pillows a few weeks back, but I cant seem to find it now.

I am only just starting to feel a wee bit uncomfortable during the night now - nothing major, but if it gets worse I want to order something to help. Last pg I bought a wedge pillow, but I felt it did no good - just got flattened under the bump!!

  • Anyway, is the DreamGenii worth £40?
  • Does it keep its shape, ie not just get flattened and useless (like normal pillows eventually do?
  • Is it washable? i.e. some are for sale on ebay, but I dont really want one thats been between a sweaty pg woman's legs if it isnt washable

OR does anyone have something cheaper they can highly recommend?

many thanks, ladies!

I liked the Dreamgenii, but I found myself grappling with it when I wanted to turn over in bed.

This time, I found it much more comfy (and cheaper) to have two ordinary pillows on either side of my bump and one between my knees.

champagnesupernova · 03/07/2010 12:31

I couldn't get on with it and passed it on to a friend.
It's too big imo

Wouldn't work with this PG anyhoo, not enough room in the bed with me, dh, ds and the mahoosive pillow

I would go with ronx's suggestion of normal pillows- find the flattest ones in the house to use as your makeshift dreamgenii and then replace them with nice news ones from a sale somewhere.
HTH
and good luck with the impnding arrival

I love mine... have used it since about 16 weeks when I was getting hip pain, I'm now 31 weeks... it's the best money I've spent, but I agree it does take up room in the bed.

Bumperlicious · 03/07/2010 13:56

I think it depends really, I've seen people rave about them so I bought one but I couldn't get one with it, mainly because the cushion under my bump made me feel a bit nauseas. However they do get excellent reviews, see the reviews on this site, amazon and just search dream genii on here.

I bought mine off ebay for £25 plus p&p. You are welcome to have it for the same price if you want to give it a go, if you don't like it they seem to resell really well.

vmcd28 · 03/07/2010 15:09

bumperlicious - thanks so much for the offer. Is it washable? I wasnt too keen on having a second-hand one.

I'm still a bit undecided as yet, about the product at all - and whether 2 pillows might be all I need!

I love mine and would not have slept so well over the last few months without it.

Bumperlicious · 03/07/2010 16:13

I think so, we've just moved house so everything is in disarray at the moment! It has a removable cover too. I used it twice I think. Let me know if you you do decide you want it and I will find it for you. It's in its original packaging.

unblissfullyignorant · 03/07/2010 16:54

It's a funny one - I didn't get on with it at first, but then once I hit around the 30 week mark and my bump was getting bigger, it really came into its own and I had much better nights sleeps (and naps!) as a result.

I now use it as a support pillow for bf, which is really great for preventing getting hunched over - so it keeps on going. I haven't washed it - just bought 3 covers and kept up the cycle of washing - but be warned, putting the cover back on is DIABOLICAL!

Sponging it every now and again seems to do the trick...

Missus84 · 03/07/2010 17:00

Not worth £40, but was worth £20 off ebay (I just washed the cover).

vmcd28 · 03/07/2010 17:02

unblissfullyignorant - Have you found that it starts to flatten out, or does it keep its shape well?
Would you also mind checking the label to see if it's machine washable?
I dont like to sound like I'm obsessive compulsive or anything (altho I am a bit), bumperlicious (and I know you have personally hardly used yours), but I know how sweaty I get at night (sorry, TMI), and if I had a pillow like this, I wouldnt pass it on for that reason, so I'm slightly paranoid about using a second-hand one.

I bought one about a month ago and found it did help my sleep although I seem to sleep better on my right side with the long bit down my back and between my knees. I am 21 weeks so will have to make more of an effort to sleep on the left side as my due date gets nearer. In my last pregnancy I just used a few ordinary pillows, but seemed to be alot more uncomfortable alot sooner this time.

I bought a new one from eBay for £35 plus p&p as I had had exactly the same qualms about a second hand one, so pleased that I am not the only person with this issue!

Just after I had bought mine I did see one or two in TK Maxx for about £35 but obviously no P&P. That was a few weeks ago, not sure I they will still be there.

Oh, and my toddler LOVES it and rides it around the bedroom like a horse . As a result I washed the cover and it also took me an age to get in back on this afternoon.

ZombiePlanB · 03/07/2010 17:10

I borrowed a friend's one - washed the cover at week 35 and it was brilliant. Meant I could sleep again.

I am not sure it would recover if you washed it, maybe in a laundrette. Why not buy a new one then re-sell on ebay?

ZombiePlanB · 03/07/2010 17:11

agreeded - it's an arse to get the cover back on

vmcd28 · 03/07/2010 18:06

I'm laughing at the thought of it being ridden like a horse - kids are so annoying great at coming up with alternative things to do with items...

Thandeka · 03/07/2010 18:09

they sell em reduced in TK maxx a lot. I picked up mine new for £22.

Towanmummies · 16/08/2010 21:38

was thinking of buying one of these- but at 5'9" am not sure it would fit me properly. am currently improvising with a rolled up duvet tied with string that goes between my knees then gets cuddled in front of me. it does pretty much stop me rolling onto my back, probably because it would then end up on top of me. 30 weeks now so will see how it goes. not sure any pillow is worth £45!!

HappyGirl1 · 16/08/2010 21:52

i think it's well worth it! just love it!

ohnororo · 16/08/2010 23:27

I'm 5.9 too and it was fine length wise but still Not worth it for me, too thick under my bump and gets thrown out of bed halfway through the night. Plan to use it as bf pillow too though so maybe it'll redeem itself. Thin pillow under bump and thick pillow at my back with scrunched up duvet between my knees work for me.

lucy101 · 17/08/2010 09:09

Didn't work for me at all and I have just sold it on ebay. I would suggest buying one second hand then at least you can sell it on without losing lots of money on it if you don't take to it.

I found a number of pillows (different thicknesses, one wedged behind the back, a thinner one between the knees etc.) that could be rearranged depending on what position I was in as well as duvet folded under me was the solution (had SPD).

ReshapeWhileDamp · 17/08/2010 09:09

I got one in a baby shop sale, found it useless (too long, too large, a hassle to turn over with, and it only 'lets' you lie on your left, which I'm a bit Hmm about) and resold it on ebay for more than I paid! Grin

I am using a soft and squishy down-filled pillow between my knees at the moment, and it also cushions my tummy. Later on, I might need another pillow behind my back.

I can't see how useful a Dreamgenii would be as a breastfeeding pillow, tbh. Unless it zips up in some way? It would be all unwieldly and awkward, surely?

emmyloo2 · 17/08/2010 09:28

I love mine. Best thing I have bought.

MyThumbsHaveGoneWeird · 17/08/2010 11:42

I really like mine. Am only 21 weeks but already far more comfortable with it than without. Since starting to use it I have been sleeping much more deeply.

You can sleep on either side, but it is a bit of a pain to turn over in the night. And it does form a slight barrier around you which makes cuddling a bit hard.

Londonista · 17/08/2010 13:29

I am considering buying one before my husband evicts me from the bed for building weird pillow mountains... I need it for horrific lower back pain. I normally sleep on my stomach and miss it oh so much. I even bought a "holo" so I could just laze around on my stomach at random times - was sceptical but it was like slipping on a comfortable pair of shoes (being able to lie on my stomach again).
