I've just done a positive test and am about 5 or 6 weeks pregnant for the first time. Hooray! But I'm not sure what to do about buying bras. I am already finding my regular bras a bit tight and would like to buy some more, but I don't want to get some and then find I'm even bigger a few more months down the line. How much bigger will I get? When is it safe to buy a new size bra that will last more than a week? I'm on a budget so don't want to spend my live savings on bras.

I had the same situation. Unfortunately, you need to have bras that don't pinch and you will possibly need to buy a few during the pregnancy.

If you go to a good place to get fitted (I'd say NOT M&S or Mothercare), they can fit you with a non-wired bra that has a bit of space in the cup now. You also want to be buying bras that you do up on the tightest back setting so you have room to grow. With non-wired bras you can have some room to change size and can keep them till they're tight as there's no wire to put pressure on you.

If you want to stick to underwires during pregnancy, you need to change them whenever you change size, even if it's just a little bit.

Great, thanks for the advice. I suppose it was a bit optimistic to hope that I would be able to get away with not buying many. Incidentally, why not M&S for the fitting?

I've found them not very good and if you check other threads on maternity bras, it seems I'm not the only one. They can be very bad about selling you a bra that is too big in the back because they don't have the range/stock in bigger cup sizes with smaller back sizes.

My local Mothercare also didn't have the stock in, although they do a better range of sizes online.

Bravissimo have an online guide on how to tell if your bra fits well - even if you don't go to them for fitting, I'd recommend checking the guide before getting fitted so that you know if the fitter is talking nonsense - e.g. telling you that soft cup bras don't touch the chest between the breasts, which a lot of people seem to get told!

Hi I had same thoughts - a new bra so early? First preg so no experience. I went to m & s and they were v.good, but maybe I just got lucky. I found I could get non wired tshirt bras, 2 for £15, which give enough support, I am not mahoosive up top with 32 back so may not suit everyone. But they've seemed like bliss after my previos underwiref ones. Bargain too.

Your boobs tend to increase most dramaically in the first few weeks then don't change much until near D-Day. I would get measured now, go for ones without underwire as the underwire can harm the developing breast tissue then get measured again when you are 36-38 weeks.

i started at a 36b, then i had to buy non-wired bras in tesco in the czech republic when i was 6 weeks cause i was on hols and mine were so uncomfy. they were a 38c.

in between (cant remember when!) i went up to a 38d then i put off remeasuring as long as possible as i dont have loads to spend on bras either!

i recently remeasured again (27 weeks) and am now a 40dd...
my mum said the biggest she got to with us was a 40dd, so maybe i'm done now...?
