Hi ..this is my third pregnancy and I am lot older than I was last time - ten years in fact

I am getting nasty nasty pain low down in my pelvis - from a quick google it looks like it could be SPD ..Anyone have any experience of this and how do I stop it getting worse .. ?

Is there anything I can do at all ?

My knees are knackered already so if I get SPD as well I am going to be a wreck by the time I give birth ..

I've got it!

Get a physio referral asap and start exercising in a pool (gently and never do breast-stroke legs). Pilates can also help - a lot of physio exercises given for SPD are pilates based.

Pelvic Partnership

See above for help.

You should be able to see a physio for some advice, although they vary widely in their helpfulness from waste-of-time to not-interested in my experience, I'm afraid.

Basically, sleep with a pillow between your knees, avoid movements where you bear your weight on one leg (eg sit down to put your trousers on, try climbing the stairs side-on) and put a poly bag on your car seat and keep your knees together when you turn to get in or out.

There's am SPD support thread on here somewhere, in Pregnancy I think ...

I had SPD first time round and think I'm starting to get it again.

Agree with previous advice here, especially pilates and sleeping with a pillow between your knees.

And yes, it absolutely does really hurt!

Apparently, certain birthing positions are better too (though I had c-section, so didn't affect me).

Be careful what you're referred to though - I was referred to one of those "sit in a semi-circle and be talked down to as though you're thick" group things. That does no good for SPD. Try and get referred for actual physio. I had to pay for this after walking out of the class.

Lol, I had to sit through the class too. I was the guinea pig demonstrating how to do some moves (e.g. pelvic tilts) to the others as I already knew them! I did then get indidivual physio sessions on the NHS though.

Thank you all so much I have never heard of it ... until yesterday anyway .. thank you for the advice, have just arranged an appt with an osteopath - will that help ?
And sleeping suggestions taken on board too... I am struggling with stairs and twisting to get out of the car and yes, cannot get my jeans on without sitting down ..

Oh god its really looking like spd isnt it ? Oh well..does it clear up after baby is here ?

will head off and find the SPD thread ...x

Another top tip - don't assume that because you feel much better 12 weeks postpartum that it's a good idea to go to TurboKick classes. It's not.

japhrimel · 03/07/2010 11:53

Osteopath can help if you've got out of alignment, e.g. in your hip joints, and they may also be able to help with muscle tension because of it. However, you'll need to see a physio to get the exercises to strengthen the muscles to hold your pelvis in place.

Lol SoBloodyTired !! No danger of that for me but have taken the advice on board !!

`can anyone link me to the spd thread ..have been trawling through and cant find it !!!!
