Am I kidding Myself?! - Question to all Mums out there!

Hi,

After some advice from Mums out there that have experienced the first few months of having a new born baby!

I have been looking into doing a short Open University writing course, the course starts in September ( my baby is due on the 27th of September) and lasts until december. The work is completely done from from home and it supposed to take up 10 hours a week. Am I completely kidding myself that I will be able to cope with studying and looking after a newborn? Will I just be far too tired to do both or is there a chance that I may just be able to cope? Don't know if I'm under estimating the work involved in having a newborn! During these 3 months I will have a lot of support from my family.

Many Thanks in Advance!

Absolute rubbish, of course you can do it! I had two babies during my 3 year full time degree. Hard work but doable. The hardest part of all was listening to all those miserable people telling em I'd never do it. And the poster who sauid they were more productive because they had to be so focused is absolutely right.

Go for it!

I didn't even brush my teeth regularly for the first few weeks after I had my 1st baby. Washing, cleaning and eating were pretty low on my list let alone studying!

Go ahead and try if you want (and I truly hope you manage it ), but don't beat yourself up if it's too much to take on.

Really, please think about it. One of the things I regret is allowing people to completely rain on my plans to combine being a student and a mum, all of which worked out perfectly. It CAN be done, it's needn't even be that hard.

Well, you need to realise that initially it will depend how your birth has gone, you will need more rest and recovery time after a difficult birth or a c-section,and also your baby, who's temperment is impossible to predict! Other than that, there is no doubt you will be tired, waking several times a night and breastfeeding round the clock is tiring. However,I did get a lot of reading done while my babies breastfed, and tiny babies sleep a lot too.If you have lot of help generally then you will be in the best possible position to do the course, but personally my brain was so taken up with the baby and the baby and nothing else but the baby that I couldn't concentrate on anything very well while my children were very small.

I think it depends on you. I don't think I could have done it, but some people do degrees with a baby. It's a big, big shock though having to look after a baby. I wondered whether I'd ever have a hot cup of tea again, but as someone else has said on the thread, I did read a lot of books while breastfeeding in the middle of the night. Good luck.

I couldn't have managed it after my first. I was a bit shell shocked at having to look after a baby.

After my third I could have managed it though! LOL

can I shout this is a wind up? You are joking us and don't really mean it?

Why would you want to do an poen uni course for the first few weeks of your babies life?

do it later when they have left home

Have a friend who is doing an OU course with a new born in the middle of it. It is her 4th though so she knew what to expect.
