I have been given fish oils to take. I really want to take them for the health of the baby but having never eaten fish in my life and cannot stand the taste/smell etc am wondering if there is something else I can take.I am able to take the tablet however for about an hour afterwards suffer from reflux with the nasty after taste of fish which is making me reech.
Is there anything else I can take that will have the same effect on the baby?

I have been using the Pregnacare vitamins and fish oil capsules, and dont think I've ever tasted the fish oil itself. Always take the fish oil immediately before a meal or with a meal. That should help stop the taste of it coming back too much.
And take a mouthful of Gaviscon at the same time, to try to stop the reflux happening.

You could try linseed oil, or another veggie omega oil, but to be honest, they taste a bit fishy too!

Take your capsule of oil with/before food and they shouldn't repeat on you.

PS you need to take fish oil with caution during pregnancy as some of them contain a lot of vitamin A which is not advisable. The pregnacare ones don't contain vitamin A

Hi boots do a fish oil that also contains parsley seed oil, so if it does repeat on you you just get a parsley taste instead. I took this on my last pg. I think they were called feel the difference high strength. This was 3 years ago though!

Thank you all so much for the helpful advice Clareanna the parsley seed oil one sounds good will have a look for it.

Try V-Pure - doesn't really taste of anything. It's made from algae (which fish eat).

At the risk of repeating myself, I'd use one specifically for during pregnancy. Fish oils tend to be high in vitamin A, which can be toxic to the fetus if taken in high doses

DHA has all the omega that you might need. I take DHA rainbow light with one a day prenatal vitamin. I am not sure if this brand available in the UK.
No side effects, but it does make your pee very yellow, no funny smells though.

frenchfries22 · 30/06/2010 15:34

Vmcd28 the fish oils I have were prescribed by my OB so def suitable for pregnancy. Perhaps I will look for different prenatal one I guess it will just be trial and error but lots on here to try thank you!

No probs, just making sure that if u change which ones you're taking that you were aware of the reasons why they have to be taken with caution :-)

Vistana · 30/06/2010 19:11

Have you tried taking it just before you go to bed, as I always do that otherwise I can taste the fish and I hate the taste of fish!

oldmum42 · 02/07/2010 16:05

What VMCD said -

Fish oil should be fish body oil, not fish liver oil, which had high levels of vit A in it, and that should be avoided while pregnant.

I take pregnacare + omega oils, and I think there are a couple of other big-brand preg Vits which include fish oil - these will all be fine.

Also, although the pregnacare+ tablets are expensive, they are Pharma-grade, very purified so contain no mercury (cheap oils may contain mercury as they don't process it out).

Have you ever tried 'good oil'? it's in lots of supermarkets and it's made from hemp seed. It's got (I believe) the best ratio of essential fatty acids (omega 3 and 6) from all plant based oils (it's not just a matter of getting the righ essential oils, to get the best results it needs to be in the right proportion). It tastes sort of nutty, but quite pleasant. It's best to use it raw if you can. I use it sprinkled a little bit on salad, or try and use it in place of margarine (although this can get messy as it's so runny!). It's about £4/5 for a decent sized bottle.

oldmum42 · 02/07/2010 20:36

Angels,

I tried Good Oil, but it tasted of fish to me, despite the "nutty" claim on the bottle - it sat in my fridge for ages until I threw it out.

I have a VERY sensitive sense of smell/taste, so maybe it does taste nutty to normal people !

It left me with the impression that fish taste fishy because they have lots of Omega oils in them, not because they are fish IYKWIM?

angels1 · 03/07/2010 09:08

yeah, know what you mean, these odd smells/adversions to food are terrible!. You can get an omega seed sprinkle/seed mix from 'the food doctor' brand (i've got mine from sainsburys) and I think holland and barrett do their own too. Maybe a few seeds sprinkled in food might not taste too fishy???

sedgiebaby · 03/07/2010 09:17

Please check out for yourself re linseed/flaxseed oil supplements before taking them in pregnancy, I chose to drop mine and take a purified fish oil for pregnancy. I think you can get DHA from a algae derived one, but I don't know more than that?

shadowpuss · 03/07/2010 19:18

I had also wondered about this as I was told to take fish oils, but can't as I am severely allergic to fish, so could only take omega oils derived from non-fishy sources.

oldmum42 · 03/07/2010 19:56

Yes ANGELS, I love The Food Doctor seed mixes, great on salad, or even sprinkled on soup, very tasty but I do tend to eat the odd handful on it's own as a snack too. NO fish taste at all - you'd probably need a couple of good spoonfulls a day to get a decent amount of omegas.
