Well, I hope that's all it is anyway...

Never had this before in previous pregnancies

This one (I'm 35w), is almost unbearable! (The heartburn)

Am downing bottles of Gaviscon, literally

Is this a really normal symptom of pregnancy?! I really didn't know this

LittleBeth I've also had a sore throat for the last few weeks, but haven't felt poorly at all with it... I wonder if it's the heartburn that's causing it?

Thanks all for the tips

Also a member of the heartburn brigade. Have had to resign myself to avoiding spicey stuff (boo) and most of the fruit I enjoy. I only figured out the other day that my breakfast glass of orange juice was causing me major problems by the time I got to work at 8am, so have now cut that out and it seems to have helped a lot. Regular gobfuls of milk have also helped. My mum suggested polo mints (?!), what the hell, bought some today, will try anything!

Heartburn truly is a miserable complaint though!

my ds was bald so not sure about that! rantidine was the one i was thinking of

Am also drinking bucket loads of Gaviscon and am only 21 weeks - have been like this since about week 8. It's just lovely!

My three were all VERY hairy, even on their backs and i CRIED and CRIED with the heartburn.
Have no constructive advice apart from agreeing with others, i think i FINALLY got ranatidine late in my third pregnancy!
Before then it was the gloopy goo!
I also drank milk, a little often.

oooh I am going to call my GP tomorrow and ask for zantac. Only 8 weeks and normally (when not pg) take omeprazole for a hiatus hernia. Saw stupid locum doc who knew nothing and said no you have to stop taking it when I found out I was pregnant..

Have been miserable with heartburn and general sore throat etc and increasingly gaviscon advance make me want to be sick so there is light at the end of the tunnel ! Zantac might be a good compromise. Anyone else out there take it in the first trimester ?

vanloadtovenice · 30/06/2010 13:28

I've been on omeprazole since wk 8, it's not ideal, but the acid was making me feel even more sick, have HG, so....

But can confirm it really works.

Like everyone else, no-one suggested anything stronger than the gloop with dd1 and dd2, despite the fact I was producing so much acid it made it near impossible to sleep!

It's a killer and you totally stop enjoying food - I've found my triggers are - Garlic (in any quantity), chilli, muesli (v bizarre but porridge is fine) fatty foods esp pastries or anything yummy like tiramisu or choc puddings, juices (though freshly squeezed seems to be better), carbonated drinks, anything minty esp mint tea, filter coffee (the odd cappuccino seems to be fine but not past 3pm). Mostly the later I go in the pregnancy I seem to be able to avoid the worst of it by eating small easily digested meals and eating as early as possible in the evening or barely eating at past 8pm. Digestion process or rather indigestion doesn't seem to kick in for hours after eating so the 2am burn is best avoided. A small pot of natural yoghurt after a meal seems to help quite a bit too. Icecream only seems to give relief for a v short while and I think makes it worse overall because of the sugar. Plus you'll be a total lard a** by the end
