Hi

I had my first child in October 1996. I am getting married next month and plan on trying for a baby straight away.

However in my last pregnancy my waters (both sets) went at 20-21 weeks. The consultants at the hospital admitted me at 28 weeks (when the problem was detected) and there I stayed until 36 weeks were the baby was delivered by c-section as my placenta had started to fail.

I am worried about the same things happening again as it won't be easy staying in hospital for such a long periods of time this time with having a six year old at home.
(The consultant I was under was one of the top doctors in the UK at the time, and various doctors in the hospital argued about my condition sould I deliver or wait until the baby was bigger etc., none of them could believe that I never went into labour at any stage, I didn't even have any braxton hicks !! )however an MRI scan at 28 weeks showed that the baby had very small lungs and would not survive so I started to to receive steroid injections . I had none of the infections present that go with SPROM so they never found out why they ruptured so early.

I was one of the lucky ones as my daughter was small 2kg but extremly healthy, she was put on a IV for antibiotics and given a lumber puncture as soon as she was born but was on the ward with me after 2 hours. She has always been healthy.

However as far the placenta this was a problem my own mother had with me spending 5 months in hospital.

Can some one please advise me on this and tell me there experiences of SPROM.

hi karen01,
i had SPROM at 22 weeks last year and was admitted to hospital straight away. i was given anti-biotics to prevent infection and steroid injections for the baby's lungs but like you i never went into labour. sadly, my baby died in-utero at nearly 25 weeks. there was still no sign of labour starting so i was induced for delivery. i also could not be given an explantation as to why i ruptured-it just seemed, unfortunately, to be "one of those things".
however, i'm pg again and now at 29 weeks and , tip wood, everything has been super this time. i have been well-monitored by both the midwife and my consultant which has given me lots of confidence during this pg. so i don't think you should worry about it happening to you again. like me, it could have been just one of those things for you and hopefully, you'll never have to experience it again. i'd say have a great wedding and then "go for it"!

Hi Brookstone

sorry to hear about your baby.

Glad to hear everything is Ok with this one.

I will be going ahead and trying and hoping that my next pregnancy will be fine.

I think I will just have to make sure I am put under a good consultant who will moniter my pregancy throughly through out. I am in the process of getting my old notes so that I can hand them to the mw etc when I do fall pregnant so that they can see the situation from the start.

Thank you for your response. Hope everything continues to be OK with pregnancy and Good Luck.
