Worried: bleeding & cramps at 5 weeks

I'm having a bit of a panic. I'm only 5 weeks pg with DC2 and have had a bit of spotting today - brown blood, which I was not too worried about. But I am now having some cramping in my lower abdomen too and am starting to panic.

As I don't have a midwife yet should I call NHS direct? Would I be given an appointment at the weekend? What would they do at an appointment - scan?

I never had any of this with DS! Please help if you can.

I'm not sure if there is much they can do at 5 weeks - a heartbeat wouldn't show up on a scan yet.

I miscarried at 5 weeks - initially spotting, then painful cramps and bleeding.

That's what I thought. So, do you think I should just wait and see what happens next?

I just had this at 8 weeks and the on call dr told me to monitor the situation and to call back if the bleeding turned red and increased.

At 5 weeks they won't be able to tell much from a scan, so they may want you to wait a week. I was terrified, but it turned out that all was ok.

At 5 weeks I am presuming it may be implantation. I really feel for you as I know how awful this is. I would call your duty dr tomorrow and see what they advise. If anything gets worse tonight call NHS Direct.

I will be thinking of you and hope everything is fine.

I would wait it out - in a week's time you'll have a better idea of the situation and could have a scan if necessary.

Thanks guys - I'll wait it out and keep hoping it is implantation.

So sorry to hear about your mc Missus.

Hi there, just thought I'd give you the value of my experience, I miscarried 5 weeks ago and if you are in any doubt what so ever, go straight to A&E if it's outside of your normal surgery hours. NHS direct are a waste of time, they can only advise that you take paracetamol for the cramps and or see your GP/go to hospital. Additonally those above are correct that at 5 weeks it's highly unlikely they would find a heart beat upon scanning, however, a scan will show any abnormalities with the sac and they are therefore able to give a good indication as to how the pregnancy is progressing.
Good luck and hope all goes well x

Thanks Mama. I've had no more spotting yet today but my abdomen feels like it is on fire. I've rested the whole day and I'm hoping the rest will help me along a bit.

I've been advised of the number for my local early pregnancey unit so I'll call them if I get more cramping.
