Hi,

I am feeling sick all day every day (am 9 weeks tomorrow). In order to quell the nausea I am having to eat at least every hour or so and I am putting on weight!

I have gone off fruit and veg (although managed salad last night), and I am eating things like Rice Krispie bars, s&v snackajacks, toast and cola (a few small cans a day).

I was overweight already before I got pg (11 stone-ish) and I'm a little fed up that I am eating this way. My question is, when I start feeling better, can I try and get rid of this extra weight? If possible the only weight I want to put on is baby/fluid.

I will make sure I eat a healthy diet, but not sure what exercise I can do, they do not do aquanatal anywhere near where I live (south Devon) and I am rubbish at yoga.

You can tell me if i'm being a prat btw.

I gained weight in the 1st trimester then lost it in the 2nd when I felt better. However I am much more overweight than you, and my body 'knew' it didn't need the extra fat I think! I try to walk as much as possible and keep active. Don't know about gyms and things.... (maybe I ought to!!) Good luck though and hope all goes well.

Hi there,
You sound just like me. I put on loads in first 4 months - the only thing that got me through the day was white carbs (cheese sandwiches, brioche, toast, mashed potato) couldn't face fruit and salad. and within an hour of stopping eating, i needed more. If i had to do it again I'd do the same just to get through the dreadful times.
I've been more normal for about 6-8 weeks and I'm still eating what i want, but i want apples and oranges a few times a day now. And can eat a normal balanced meal.
The weight i put on isn't going, but i'm not putting any more, my stomach is just turning from flab to baby.
I have been swimming a few times. unfortunately not enough to make a weight difference, but it feels good and i'm sure if you wet more often than i do it'd tone and stabilise your weight.

You can't diet specifically to lose weight when pregnant as it may cause issues with what is released when your body breaks down fat. However you may be suprised at how little you put on - my metabolism changed and although I was eating loads to stop being sick, I only put 1.5kg on in the whole first trimester which is within guideline amounts (about 4 pounds).

I've put on loads of weight over the last few months (now 19 weeks pg), I think probably more than a stone, just couldn't stop eating.

Also had a really sore lower back which I think was related to hormones making ligaments more lax so walked much less and couldn't swim which I usually do a couple of times a week.

Finally feel motivated to eat more healthily, restart swimming and walk more.

Would be happy not to lose weight, but not to put much more on, I feel very big and uncomfortable and have rolls of flab unrelated to bump which is grim.

I will hopefully do the same and eat much healthier food when I am feeling better. I hope to go swimming at least a couple of times a week too.

so glad you put up this message as I was going to do one on the same thing! I have to eat all the time to stop the sick feeling. I'm only 6 weeks and already feel my body getting fatter...goodness knows what I'll look liuke by 12 weeks! But if I don't I feel terrible. I feel terrible anyway, come to think of it, but I can cope so long as I eat. I was obese in the past, but managed to lose about3 stone, but now I'm worried I'm just putting it all back on I know I'm suppose to put on weight in pregnancy, but I'm sure I've got more than the recommended amount already! It makes it difficult when you cna only eat what you cna manage (ie bread and cheese instead of salad and apples).

can't even excercise either as I'm so shattered, I can just about manage small walks every day, but that's it

I also went off (raw) fruit and veg in the early weeks.

You might want to try low GI carbs (brown, whole grain, porriage oats, brown rice etc) as these will keep your blood suger level for longer than "white" carbs such as white bread, sugary biscuits etc, and a lot of the sickness seems to be from the preg hormones making your blood sugar drop faster, to make you hungry (natures way of making you eat more to store it up for baby!!).

Also, some people feel a lot less sick if they eat ptotein snacks (low fat though, as fat can make you feel sicker), such as cottage cheese, or lean meat - again this will help keep your blood sugar level.

I have struggled to eat well through first trimester, loads of carbs and little fruit/veg, very different from my normal diet, but I am now 12 weeks and ahve only put on 3 lbs

japhrimel · 27/06/2010 14:18

Fwiw, I'm now 15 weeks pregnant and want fruit and salad all the time! A big change from earlier when it was donuts and toast and biscuits. So it can get a lot easier to eat really healthily later on.
