Anyone Taking or taken Progesterone Pessaries?

OK maybe a bit TMI coming up. I am on day two of these. Is it supposed to be so messy? Found it easier than I though putting it in.

I am finding it really messy to be honest and its making me worry more because I feel it coming out and I have to rush to the loo to check for blood (there hasnt been)

How long do you generally keep using them for? The hospital have given me two weeks worth and I am back there next week for a scan but on holiday from sat for a week so want to make sure I have enough.

And last question.

What do they actually do? After 7 mc's we are at the point of trying anything, Consultant seemed surprised I havent been given them before now as well.

I had these following IVF and I think they're to support an early pregnancy. Even amongst different IVF clinics, they get prescribed for varying times - some for a couple of weeks, some for six weeks etc, so just be guided by your doctors.

As for the mess - yes, they're horrible! I used to lie down for 20 mins after putting them in and that seemed to help a bit, but I'd still use panty liners to avoid ruining lots of knickers! Don't worry about how much comes out, though as it's the wax the progesterone's in that is leaking, and you'll still be absorbing the progesterone itself.

You can, I think also put insert them rectally rather than vaginally which is supposed to be less messy, but I always felt (completely irrationally I'm sure!) that the progesterone might not get to where it was needed so easily!

Julez - I am using them, as bsmirched says, laying down for 15 mins after has helped me. Progesterone suppositories are supposed to be used until the placenta takes over at somewhere between 10 and 12 weeks. So doc's do vary as to when they say stop, but most say stop at 12 weeks.

Warning: if you stop having started, it can in itself cause a m/c, so do make sure you continue taking them, until told otherwise.

hope this helps?

Julez

I used them. I had 3 MC and various tests which revealed nothing. So I was put on Cyclogest and Clexane this time. (The doc stopped the Clexane after 2 weeks due to a couple of big bleeds.) I took the Cyclogest from the moment of the BFP to 12 weeks (well, actually until about 14 because I was told to finish the packet).

I am not sure what the benefit of them is really, if you have normal progesterone levels (as I do). But the prof I saw admitted that they don't seem to hurt and may help and so if they don't find an obvious cauyse for MC they prescribe them (same for Clexane).

They are revolting! I used panty liners at first but had a moment at work when I realised that they had stained my new Reiss trouser suit (amazingly came out at the dry cleaners!). I then went on to proper sanitary towels and used them until I finished.

The plus point is that I am now 22+5 and it seems to be going ok. Fingers crossed. I have no idea whether the Cyclogest helped, but I have everything crossed for you this time.

Congratulations!

X

Thankyou all.

Rainbowdays, how are you doing? I have no intention of stopping!

Since taking them, my morning allday sickness has stepped up a level. And I am just feeling dreadful. Which is hopefully a good sign.

Hi Julez - I am doing ok. I have occasionally popped in to read the testing testing thread, but I am not wanting to click on the miscarriage threads, so have been avoiding them, blame it on stupid irrational thinking due to preggo hormones. I just am so trying to think positively and calmly this time that I am avoiding all things that could make me have negative thoughts, and that includes the miscarriage board here on mn. Irrational but still what I am doing.... . I am glad to hear that your sickness has increased (mean that in the best possible way)! I am having very mild symptoms this time. But since I have had strong symptoms with most of my m/c's I really don't mind! Hoping that it is my body just saying this is normal and ok! I am 6 weeks today, and my normal time for m/c is 6+1, except with progesterone, which seemed to prolong it all. So I am trying to remain relaxed about it all. I am going to gp tomorrow and going to ask for referral to go to EPU in 10 days time. Lets hope this old progesterone does the right thing for us this time!

Fingers crossed rainbowdays!

I know what you mean about the mc section, I have the testing thread bookmarked so dont go into the actual section too often.

I am 5+5 today, keeping everything crossed for both of us x
