What did you get cot, cot-bed or crib for your baby to sleep in? And why?

How long will the baby sleep in the cot, cot-bed or crib?
I would like to make the best investment when the time comes in the right piece of furniture and not sure what are the advantages of each different type of bed for the baby.

Thanks!

I got a cot but I think cot-beds are probably best value for money as they turn into their first bed too. Cribs have a very short life-span but if you want your baby in your room and the room is too small for the cot to fit in then it could be a useful purchase I suppose.

My son went into his cot straight away and stayed in it until I started to potty train him at 2yrs 4 months, we then bought him a car bed which is a small single but will last him a good few years. Well at the moment the plan is it will last him until DS2 (due in August) needs it! I can lay in flat in it so no reason he should outgrow it.

Both were bought second hand with new mattresses.

Cot-bed, now as a bed. still in it at 2.6 but 2nd baby due in October so will be buying a new bedroom set for dd and bump will get her old stuff. My SIL kept her dd in a cot-bed until she was 4 then into a bed but could probably have lasted longer.

I haven't decided yet, but was thinking of a cot-bed for the nursery (always think 'nursery' sounds rather grand for our junk room!) plus a moses basket on a stand thing to go in our room while it's tiny. Cot bed will be an investment and moses basket I will look for second hand or get a cheap version.

I bought a cot with my DS, now 5. They were quite a bit cheaper than cotbeds, and I assumed we'd have to buy a single bed anyway when he was 2 or 3, as the cot bed is small.

However, my DS got given a racing car bed hand-me-down from his cousin, and is still in it - and guess what, it's a cotbed size mattress. SO, to answer your question, I will more than likely be buying a cotbed this time around, and keeping DC in it till it's 5-ish.

I have two friends who had cotbeds, but both of them bought normal beds for their DCs when they were 3!?! Seems a complete waste. Altho one of them is one of those parents who feels the need to keep buying new things for her DD...

We went a bit overboard because I wasn't sure what to get at first. My parents offered to buy us a cot-bed because 'they're the best value', which I agreed to, but I also got a moses basket as there's no room in our bedroom for the cotbed.

Then I read it was best to have baby in your room for six months if possible, so we got a cheap crib (£50 inc. mattress on offer from toys r us) to go in there instead, thinking it might last a bit longer than a moses basket.

The moses basket is now downstairs and I'll use it in the day for as long as poss. once the baby is here

So I'd say it depends on the size of your room and how long you want to keep your baby in with you. If you've got the space a cot-bed is probably all you need.
