Transverse Lie

I'm only 31 weeks so even though it is very bloody uncomfortable and is causing me terrible heartburn, pressure on my rib cage, ligament pain and shortness of breath, I hadn't really worried about the fact that the baby still seems to be favouring lying in a transverse position.

For some reason, I had just assumed that within the next 2-3 weeks that it would sort itself out but because it's been so uncomfortable in the last few days, I did a bit of online research this evening and found that really most babies should be turning at 30/31 weeks and if they're still transverse by 34 weeks that this can become a problem and the midwife might discuss the possibility of a cesarean

I feel really stupid that I didn't know this!! But now I've obviously managed to get myself quite worried

Is anyone else in this position? Or have you been here before? Do the exercises recommended on websites like this really work? Is this actually something to be concerned about? Not due to see midwife for another fortnight...

Both my dds moved late into the pregancy, first at 34 weeks and second at 36 weeks, very painful, the moving, obviously the birth was bloody murder. Try not to panic also had friend in same situation as you and baby moved at last minute!! All babies were girls!!

JamieJay · 21/06/2010 22:41

Baby had been lying transverse at all appointments from 25 to 32 weeks here - had check up today at 34 weeks and she is now head down and 1/5 engaged so they can move quite late.

From the heartburn I was suffering and 'lumps' I could feel I suspect it's only the last couple of days that she has moved so try not to worry yet

lou031205 · 21/06/2010 23:15

They start to worry at 37 weeks, I think.

EvilTwins · 21/06/2010 23:18

One of my DTs was transverse. I was told at 34 weeks that she was unlikely to move, BUT that was probably because her sister was in the way (breech - awkward buggers the pair of them) Twin2, the transverse one, got her head stuck under my ribcage eventually, so when I had them (by elective c-section), they really had to work to get her out, and she had a little dent on the side of her head for a few weeks, where my rib had been.

Sorry - that's not at all comforting for you, but I want you to know that I sympathise. Transverse has got to be one of the most uncomfortable positions for the mum.

My DD was discovered to be transverse at 38 weeks. I was taken into hospital on bedrest because her feet were presenting and my 2 DSes were both born before 39 weeks.

They booked me in for a c-section...whilst they were prepping me for it they found she'd turned. She was born naturally within a few hours!

Ozziegirly · 22/06/2010 00:35

Mine is lying transverse with its feet up under my rib cage (kind of an L shape), but at my last check up (29 weeks) my Obs wasn't concerned and said they can still move around fine at this stage.

She wouldn't have even mentioned it but I asked if she could feel where the baby was.

LittleMissSnowShine · 22/06/2010 08:39

Thanks for all your answers!! I think I'm just a bit nervous because I'm only scheduled to see midwife every couple of weeks between now and my due date and I'm not really sure how serious being transverse at 31 weeks is!!

It's v uncomfortable tho and between the heart burn, breathlessness and rib pain it's wearing me out lol

But it's good to know there's still a good chance the baby will decide to shift itself - was in a panic last night when I realised that if it stays where it is then a caesarian might be an increasingly likely possibility. Oh god, I'm such an over anxious first timer!!!

Just to add that I am 34 weeks and my baby is also lying transverse! Am seeing the midwife on Thursday and have lots of questions as I am also anxious about a CS!! Good luck - fingers crossed mine and yours will move soon...

LaTrucha · 22/06/2010 11:31

I would think you had quite a lot of time for the baby to move. DD - very unusually - turned to transverse at 38 weeks . Thanks for that DD!

I thought I felt this baby trying to lift its head at about 35 weeks. I did do the Spinning Babies stuff and so far he is head down still.

It is very unlikely (impossible?) for a transverse baby to be born naturally.

LittleMissSnowShine · 22/06/2010 11:44

I think my problem is that I have these bloody strong abdominal muscles - I didn't show until about 23 weeks and I found some of the second trimester quite painful as my fairly taut ligaments and muscles were having to stretch to accommodate the baby. This is probably the reason I'm still carrying the baby so high and I would imagine is what is making it that bit more difficult for the baby to turn.

I always knew yoga would get me into trouble - never listen to anyone who says exercise is good for you!! Oh well, at least it shouldn't be such a problem second time round....

i also have a baby (no 3) in transverse (maybe now slightly long/oblique lie) it is quite low down though so does not cause any rib pain. i feel it is much more uncomfy than the other two who behaved perfectly. i could feel it was clearly transverse from 20 something weeks until 34 weeks, now slightly head down but spine still transverse. Am hoping that it will have continued on a downward turn by next week and 36 week appointment. Am not really wanting a section at all. have done too much looking on internet and know that a large percentage will have turned by now but also that if it has not by labour time, a section is inevitable. Here's hoping all these babies do the decent thing! Even if mine does go more head down, it is likely to have spine on my right side, looking slightly out the way, which i think is not the best either.

That's what I was told too happyh - and arse in the air on all fours while you're waiting for the medics too!

LittleMissSnowShine · 22/06/2010 15:51

That's what got me worried when I started reading up about it last night, happyh. I just assumed that the baby would turn by itself and I'm still pretty confident it will do but it was a bit scary reading about what could happen if it doesn't turn and you go into labour earlier than expected!!

we should keep this thread updated every time somebody's baby obligingly moves into the right position - i was trying some of the funny exercises i mentioned in my OP last night. but no change as yet!!!

Heartburn, rib pain and breathlessness are all symptoms you could be having anyway, transverse or not. Most women will suffer with these symptoms towards the end of their pregnancy as did I and my baby was head down. Labour was very painful though as he was back-to-back and I ended up with a c-sect in the end but you know what- it was all fine and there is no point in worrying about things too much when a lot if it is out of your hands.
