Hi, i'm currently 32 weeks and due to find out in 4 weeks time whether my obstetrician will let me have an elective c/s, due to a pre-existing back problem. I'm really paranoid that he's going to say no (as he was quite negative when i saw him at 24 weeks, despite a recommendation for it from my orthopaedic surgeon), and the prospect terrifies me. Don't get me wrong, i'm not trying to have one for 'easy' reasons, it's just that the thought of having to go through natural labour and endure the back problems i had last year (prolapsed discs, nerve root compression, narrowly avioded surgery, off work for 6 months) is really beginning to stress me out to the point that DP and i are now looking at alternative options, in case i get a categorical no, ie going privately to ensure i get the delivery i want (and need!). We've had a look on the internet, but only came up with the Portland (far too expensive). NB. going privately really would be a last resort, but we feel it's important to have a back-up plan. All suggestions/advice/previous experiences gratefully received. Thanks x (sorry it's a bit long-winded)

You are entitled to a 2nd opinion (on the NHS!), so if you're not happy with the decision I would ask (your GP) to re-refer you. Perhaps your GP could choose the most appropriate consultant, as they should be aware of the specific points of view of each consultant.

I had ds privately at Birmingham Maternity. Admittedly nearly 9 years ago now. IIRC £250 per night for the room/dressings/drugs etc, about £1200 for Consultant to perform the op, and about £700 for anaesthetist. BUPA paid for it.

Thanks Ladymuck et al, trust me, i will be doing everything in my power to ensure i get this on the NHS (I work within it myself, as a cardiac care nurse, so know how to push the system), as i said this it only an absolute last resort option to stop me going out of my mind with worry.

I'm currently looking into the prospect of 'private within NHS' options, ie the Landsell Suite at St Thomas's, but i expect it will still be beyond my price range. I think i'd be better off mustering up my powers of persuasion for 4 weeks time!

I think the Lindo wing at St Mary's Paddington is about half the price of Portland if that is any help.

Quick update - i saw my consultant this morning, and he was in total agreement for me to have a caesarean, no hassle or fuss at all. All booked for a fortnight's time, panic over thank goodness. At least i don't have to worry about arranging something privately!
