Hi had a scan today at 6 weeks due to one sided pain. All was fine and baby was in the right place, but they found a dermoid cyst on my left ovary. Doc had left epu as it was late in the day, So didn't get much info. I am booked in for another scan in 3 weeks- but wondered if anyone else had experience of pregnancy with one? And what to expect/ look out for?

Not sure what I had but I did have a cyst on one of my ovaries in all my pregnancies and they seemed to disappear of their own accord. Apparently it's only when they are 2 inches+ there is a concern. Were you told the size?

Hi thanks for replying - no wasn't directly told but remember seeing 22mm on my notes so should be ok as long as it doesn't grow

I think knackered76 is talking about a different type of cyst to a dermoid cyst. The usual type of cyst ppl refer to is a simple, fluid-filled cyst where the decision to call it a cyst or just a normal follicle depends on size, as knackered says.
A dermoid cyst has a different appearance but these are benign so don't worry, just wait for some more info from the Dr.
And congratulations

I did. I had it removed when I was 14 weeks pregnant and all was fine.

hi

I did, I've just got out of hospital with it! I'm 13 weeks today and on Friday had such agonising pain (I was vomiting with it) that I went to A and E. I took my notes with the cyst on it and so they knew what to look for, turned out the cyst had caused the ovary to twist. After a few scans and heavy painkillers, today they took me off pain relief and I didn't hurt at all, so it seems to have untwisted itself. I think the worry is if it twists a couple of times it can cut off the blood supply to the ovary which can then need removal. But, the consultant did not seem worried about it even though mine is 80mm (on the scan it is much bigger than the baby!)

So, I wouldn't worry. It was painful but not a problem baby-wise. Plus, after two morphine injections, four codeine tablets and lots of paracetamol drips, the baby was still moving, turning and waving in the scan, so as a side effect I'm feeling a lot more relaxed about the odd glass of wine!
