Ideas on why I didn't test postive until nearly 5 weeks pregnant?

I never got an answer from any dr or nurse or midwife that made much sense to me but I was a few days late when I tested postive, I had experienced pain at ovulation as is usual for me so I was quite sure about 'dates'.

I had thought perhas I ovulated again later in the cycle but then the dating scan told me I was further along than I thought. So that dispelled my theory.

Just curious if anyone else has had this or has any ideas, just weird as you hear those tests are 99.9% accurate etc.

Just entering the 3rd tri now so all is progressing well.

Late implantation? Can take a while, maybe a week after ov, then the hcg level took a while to ramp up to detectable levels.

If you look here you'll see that the range of hcg can be 5-50 at 21 days days post ov - i.e. a week after your period is due. If you had hcg at the low end, then a pg test would not detect until a level of 15-25 depending on the brand. The important thing is that your hcg increased at the appropriate rate from it's starting point.

Congratulations by the way.

Some women don't get positive pregnancy tests at all! my sister was 4 months pregnant and knew she was, but never got a positive test. Pregnancy was finally confirmed by scan, which showed she was 4 months pregnant! It is more common that thought!

Each pregnancy is different, and for you,an explanation might be: ovulation pain can come a few days before actual ovulation. Then you might just have implanted very late, hcg does not get detected by pregnancy tests until implantation. Implantation is normally thought to occur between 4 and 12 days post-ovulation, and the levels in your urine can take about 3 days after implantation to start to be high enough to be detected. So if you ovulated a couple of days later than you thought, then did not get implantation til about 12 days, then another 3 to get the test positive, it is very easy to give an explaination as to not getting a positive test til after you are late.

I hope this makes sence!

Thank you to both posters, I didn't realise about late implantation etc. and the info on hcg levels varying widely is interesting. Thank you
