Thanks all, in advance.

Dear friend of mine is about 5 weeks pregnant and is having some spotting. Eagerly anticipated and very much wanted first pregnancy. She's in her late twenties.

I only have text book knowledge of spotting as I had none during my pregnancy, so could only tell her that it can be normal. She's having some bright red spotting, usually at mid-day, not enough for a pad, usually notices it when she goes to the loo and wipes. She says it's one or two spots maybe 1/2" in diameter.

Can you share experiences re: spotting?

(BTW, we don't live in the U.K. and have no early pregnancy units here. It's standard to book in with a midwife or a maternity clinic and have a first appointment around 12 weeks. Really no care before that.)

Could be implantation bleeding. I had it with my first. Seems like spotting is fairly common, it's cramps and heavier bleeding you need to look out for. Fingers crossed for her.

I had quite sharp implantation pains (and then stretching pains) until 12 weeks, but no spotting. I would love to forward her this thread with lots of responses saying "I had spotting and it was fine".

I had spotting at 4 weeks, 6 weeks and 8 weeks similar to your friend (I am now 37 weeks with a nice big fat baby!). For me it was apparently just implantation spotting and then (in week 8) a very light period (my body had not quite caught on at that stage!) I had no cramping or any other pains and it was obviously all absolutely fine.

A friend of mine had heavy spotting and was very concerned but it turned out to be because she had had sex that week with her husband. There are loads of reasons why you can have spotting and most of them have no effect on the baby.

Lovely scruffers, congratulations on your nice big fat baby! (You will post a birth story, won't you? I love good birth stories, always make me well up.)

Had spotting at 6-7 weeks and again at 20 weeks. All is fine so far (now 26 weeks). TBH, there isn't much that can be done about it either way at this stage but I know how awful it is not knowing what is going on, really stressful, so it is a shame she can't go for an early scan (wouldn't be any point till at least 6 weeks anyway I think).

Just tell her to take each day as it comes. The chances are everything is fine.

sorry to sound negative, but I had spotting in both my miscarriages. Both were MMC at 12 weeks. Also had spotting with DS2 which obv came to nothing. If she can get an early scan then it would put her mind at rest
