Have you had a very 'quiet' baby?

What I mean is, have you had a baby that has seemed pretty inactive throughout pregnancy? This is my 4th DC and am 28 wks.

My last 3 have been somewhat movers and shakers, as I remember, quite a lot!
This one is very quiet; has the occasional football moment but other than that, not a lot.

I have already freaked myself out and been checked over in hospital; I do have an anterior placenta, which I know acts like a cushion. However, I have had 2 anterior placenta pgs before and they were not as quiet.
Anybody else had a lazy little tyke??

this one is a little snuggler and seems quite sleepy- my other two were leaping about at this stage.

i half expect when it gets born it will either

  1. sleep all the time(i hope) or 2) yell to get put back in the nice warm snuggly place.

fingers crossed for 1)

DD2 is now 3 weeks old and was the most laid back baby when I was PG. I had a panic over her movements regularly. It turns out she is just the most laid back baby ever! She just takes things as they come, DD1 would worm and squiggle and complain when things were not going her way but DD2 is so different.

hester · 17/06/2010 23:04

dd1 was very inert. She did kick, now and then, but in such a half-arsed way I was quite worried about her.

She's now 4 and has made up for lost time

catbus · 17/06/2010 23:06

OOOO encouraging words! I too hope like heck that this one will be 1) aswell!! In addition to being laid back...

Just very weird to have a quiet one after 3 boingers.

You may also be carrying more amniotic fluid with this pregnancy; that will make a difference.

But let's hope you're just carrying a really mellow kid!

jammydodger · 17/06/2010 23:39

I'm in exactly the same position as you and had been worrying - reassuring to hear it's not unusual (this is dc3 for me)...

nikkisbump · 18/06/2010 12:21

This is DC1 so not a lot to compare it to, but I have spent many days and nights worrying about LO's movements. I'm 38+5 now and at around 34 weeks things picked up, but only because baby is so big now I'm far more aware of the few movements s/he can be arsed to make! Incredibly lazy baby, just like daddy - hope it's the same when they are born!

notjustapuppymum · 18/06/2010 13:20

My lo was very sleepy and lazy too. Would never wake up for scans and didn't move the 15 times in 24 hours the MW kept banging on about for the whole pregnancy. Turned out to be a very chilled out baby, very contented and easy going.

jendaisy · 18/06/2010 14:43

With DD1 I literally NEVER felt her move - not once - the whole time I was pg. She was fine, totally healthy and from the day she was born has always been a great sleeper and a very mellow character (she is now almost 6 years). Now 34 weeks with number 2 and she is a different story, from about 13 weeks she has been wiggling around all day long. Don't worry, I'm sure things are fine.

toja555 · 18/06/2010 15:16

jendaisy, wow that is a story!(with your DD1, I mean). I am now less worried too, because I am 20 weeks preggie and feel my baby's movements only seldom (once in a day before sleep at the best times).

toja555 · 18/06/2010 15:25

By the way, do you think lack of movement (or lack of feeling movements) is something to do with being overweight? I am very overweight myself..

catbus · 18/06/2010 17:01

Wow, what a lot of lazy babies!!

toja:I think being overweight may affect being able to feel movements, but anterior placentas are also major factors in cushioning the feelings.

At my MW appt today, my belly was bulging out from a foot/hand/body part, but I really couldn't feel a thing..
I seem to only have 2 spots on my right side I ever feel anything.

Still keeping my fingers crossed this will be the classic 4th mellow child!

Toja - I was only 9.5st pre pregnancy so don't think so, but I do have an anterior placenta!

EnglandAllenPoe · 18/06/2010 21:18

not seriously overweight, and carrying a tidy bump (so no mass of water)..this one isn't OP either.

baby is just not Arsed. wasn't during the scans either..head buried in my tissues and no amount of nudging by the sonographer moved baby for a better picture.

vmcd28 · 19/06/2010 14:43

me too - I'm 17.5w, and keep being told by "helpful" people I should feel it moving, as it's my second DC. I have not felt it moving yet, as far as I know.
However, at the 12w scan of my DS 6 years ago, he looked like he was jumping on a trampoline. The whole pregnancy was murder cos he was constantly kicking and elbowing. He still never stops, 5 years later!!

However at the scan for THIS DC, it was lying peacefully, sucking its thumb. So I'm hoping that means it's a nice relaxed baby, who will lie and suck its thumb all day

LittleSilver · 19/06/2010 19:10

I'm going to be a bit of a lone voice here.

DD2 was a VERY quiet baby. But l did know that my placenta was anterior, so put it down to that. One day I woke up, went to work, and realised I hadn't felt the baby since the previous day (was about 38 weeks) I went down to get monitored and was was told it was OK but to come back if it continued.

But I felt a complete idiot, and I didn't go back (I was worried they would think I was very paranoid) I did worry a lot though. When DD2 was born she had the cord 3 times around her neck and was not in good nick.

I REALLY regret not going in earlier. As it is, DD2 is, thanks be to God, absolutely fine and bouncing on the sofa as we speak and a sturdy 2 year old. But it could have been a different story. She was very very "floppy" as a newborn, hit all her milestones on the very latest bit of normal (walked at 19 months, couldn't really get the hang of solids) and I spent a long time worrying she was developmentally delayed.

So please, please, if you are worried GO IN! DON'T do what I did and justify it because you don't want to make a fuss. Just go straight to the experts and don't hang about.

I wish you the vey best and hope I haven't scared you, but I thought your replies were potentially a bit unbalanced.

vmcd28 · 19/06/2010 20:31

That must have been horrible for you, and thank goodness it all worked out. But if you had gone in sooner, could they have done anything to help?

LittleSilver · 19/06/2010 21:16

I honestly don't know. Obviously they couldn't have got the cord off her neck, but the trace was non-reassuring when I did SROM and go in and I wonder if it would have been symptomatic if I HAD gone in when it continued to be a problem. I had the same comm mw with DD3 and she kep reminding me (believe me didn't need it!) to go in straightaway if I was worried and not stay at home.

I just felt when I read the OP's replies that they were all a bit "Oh yes, it will be fine!", which is very reassuring to read but doesn't really take the place of a qualified and professional opinion which tbh is what you need, not lay opinions.

Obviously my opinion is both lay and anecdotal! However I really wanted to encourage OP to seek medical advice if she was worried and not do as I did. Hope all goes really well with you OP, and your baby starts kicking away!

catbus · 19/06/2010 22:08

Thankyou Littlesilver
As I said I did go in and they were v.lovely, saying it doesn't matter how many times I get worried, just to go straight back.

They did a trace which was pretty hard as I was 26 wks then and so baby small and harder to keep a trace going; it was moving around a lot though, although I still couldn't feel a lot of the movements that were heard and felt by MW. They said if I were to go in again, they would probably want to scan me aswell.

They advised me also to keep feeling the movements externally; keep my hands on bump.

Since I went in I have had some quite full on movements and am a lot more aware of the more subtle ones. This baby doesn't have a pattern, so to speak, but only the other day, I couldn't coax it into moving for ages and was on the verge of going back in. That is until it decided to go ballistic for a while..

It is apparently subtle movements I am to be aware of also; some babies just don't do lots of kicking. The MW and littlesilver reminded me of one thing; if in doubt, go in; she said I would never forgive myself if I didn't and something happened; and she is right.

It is just very hard when you're busy with 3 others to keep track of movements, especially with an anterior placenta muffling it all.
It seems this one has quiet days and I just have to make the call whether they are too quiet.

Thankyou so much for all the replies; only another 11 and a bit weeks to go, then I will just spend my time poking the baby after the birth to make sure they are ok, just like the last 3 times!!!
