sonographers don't get the sex wrong so much these days do they?

I had a scan at 21 wks and 22 wks (baby in the wrong position to complete the scan) both sonographers were 'senior' with 36 and 20 years experience (radiographers before u/s technology I guess) and gave me 99% on a girl.

Since then I've heard a of a few girls who turned out boys or vice versa (on another intl. message board TBH) so do I stop buying the dresses?! I'm quite sold on a little girl now!!

There is scope for error, so I wouldn't buy too much one sex related, expecially when buying for girl and you have a boy dresses on boys isn't always a good look

My sonographer told us it was a boy, showed us penis and testicles, and said it is a boy unless willy falls off before birth , not sure how common willies falling off are but what I have bought is unisex at the moment just in case .

I was told girl with DD, at 20 weeks scan and 32 week scan and 36 weeks scan, last scan was done by consultant and she told me to think of a girls name as it was 100% girl and she was.

So they are right sometimes.

As a m/w I looked after someone the other week who had had 7 scans and at each scan had been told she was having a girl. She gave birth to a lovely boy. She said she had a whole wardrobe of pink!

Jacksmybaby · 17/06/2010 16:42

We were told a similar thing to nunnie at the 20 wk scan with DS ("it's either a boy or it's a girl with a willy!").

We have been told DC2 is a girl but somehow I don't feel as certain this time - although I think statistically mistakes can be made either way and I know they don't just go by the absence of a penis when they say girl, they actually look for the 3 lines of the labia.

midori1999 · 17/06/2010 16:42

All of mine have been right. Three boys, and was told each time I was definitely having a boy. I had 4 weekly scans with DS2 and they even wrote 'male foetus' on my notes, so I guess they must have been pretty sure...

My last pregnancy was twins and they couldn't tell at all with twin 1. I was scanned weekly and told that the consultant thought it was girl, but wouldn't confirm, as he couldn't see any 'boy bits' but couldn't see 'girl bits' either. The sonographer at my 20 week scan said the same. I was scanned at 23+4 and was told twin 2 was definitelty a girl. She was, they were both girls.

YIKES! stripeyknickersspottysock... that's not what I wanted to hear!! After 7 scans I would be expecting a dead cert verdict from the sonographers!

Before finding out I had a slight preference for a girl, after finding out I realised how much I wanted a girl but hadn't allowed myself to think it! Ashamed to say I think I'd be disappointed if a boy popped out instead :S

My friend was told girl and got a boy!! (her 4th son)
I was told boy with 3 of my boys and they were right and also found out with one of my girls and they were right. I think they are rarely wrong these days but it can happen!!

auntypurple · 17/06/2010 17:41

I had a private scan a few weeks ago and she spent ages looking for the sex. It was my second time back as she couldn't see the first time.
Was told deffo a girl, if there had been any boy bits she would have found them.

Had my 20 week scan last week at 20+6, and baby had grown a willy, called the private place who had me back for free and yep it was deffo a boy, she couldn't belive it. Said I was the first one she got wrong, she is giving me a free 4d scan in 4 weeks time because of it

stripeyknickersspottysocks · 17/06/2010 21:40

I think its very rare, in 5 years this was the first time I've met someone where they were told the wrong sex.

Maclaren · 17/06/2010 21:55

I have a picture of this ones willy lol! - am 21 weeks and had a private scan at 16 weeks! I have my 20 weeks scan tomorrow so I am hoping they will confirm otherwise I will have a hell of a lot of blue clothes for sale lol!

LittleMs · 18/06/2010 09:26

At a later stage they can confirm a girl by finding her ovaries.

With a boy by 20 weeks and sometimes later the testicles are still in the abdominal area and a tiny willy can easily be squeezed between the legs, so saying 'can't see boy bits' is not enough to prove it's a girl. They actually have to point out the girl's parts(3 lines) to be sure.

In any case most private sexing places say it's not so much down to the equipment or sonographer's experience, the most important in being able to tell is the position of the baby, and the best time to find out is between 23 and 34 weeks - that's what I've read.

NanKid · 18/06/2010 09:28

Who knows what their 'success rate' is? All I know is that I know three people, all booked in at different London hospitals in the last couple of years, who were told they were having girls and ended up with boys.

lovechoc · 18/06/2010 15:08

IMO this is why it makes more sense not to find out, esp with the first baby. That way you can't be disappointed either way, you can't set your hopes on having one gender over another etc.

More likely to be told you are having a girl and for them to get it wrong than vice versa. When they see the testicles then that's it - it's a boy!

OP hope you are happy whatever the flavour.

JamieJay · 18/06/2010 16:29

I was told a girl at 24 weeks and shown the 'hamburger' by the sonographer but must confess that every now and again I have a little moment of what if she was wrong!

Will obviously be happy whatever the flavour (and initially was quite taken with the thought of a little boy) but have bought a quite a few pink things so it could be a little interesting it she is a he!!

I agree, I didn't know first two times but when you see them you just love them regardless of their sex.

My mother-in-law says not knowing and the feeling of suspence helped her through the labour a little bit, she felt she deserved to work for the opportunity to find out who she was having. (she always dreamt of three girls, ended up with three boys :D )

I personally was so exhausted by labour first time round I didn't care who it was, as long as it was a BABY...though I was still surprised when I saw who it was.
