6 weeks and fed up already

I'm only 6 weeks pregnant but completely fed up already due to morning sickness. It's my second one, which I would've thought would be a lot easier seeing as I'd done it before.

However, I'm fed up of constantly feeling nausea, throwing up, going off food, not being able to do things, tired(and nausea) after a short walk, feeling extremely sick after reading for 10 minutes, and just generally not being fully involved in DH and DS's life now, as I'm so tired and always in bed. The worse is I know it's only the beginning, with DS1 I started getting HG around 8 weeks. OMG!

The other thing is getting back to work next week, not sure how I would cope. To briefly describe my first+second trimester from experience, it's like someone having flu and tummy bug - but not for a few days which people's body can generally tolerate, a FEW MONTHS. Ugh! People ill from these aren't expected to go into work, whereas I probably am because it's just pregnancy so get on with it. I'm not feelng that bad yet at 6 weeks but it's certainly not far off, as normally if I feel like this I would just call in sick, but I can't just call in sick for 4 whole months.

I know loads of MNetters have bad morning sickness and HG too. So surely I'm not the only one here who needs cheering up..?

yes, I sympathise agonmum. I'm only 4 1/2 weeks but suffering. Last time I was so ill I swore I would never put myself through this again...then had a mc...I felt so miserable about the whole thing and then having to go through all that horribleness for nothing

I went to my doc on monday as really stressed about work (I work in a cooking environment and can't escape cooking/smells). I have 3 weeks until summer break for 2 months (work in a school). I was really suprised that she pretty much told me to stay at home and rest, and I shouldn't work. Don't think work are too happy....but at least I can keep my misery at home and fingers crossed it'll improve by the time I'm back in september.

Why not go and talk to your doc? They might give you a bit of time off to see if it helps, and if it's really bad they might give you some meds so you can cope with work etc.

I really feel for you, as it's terrible. But people react in different ways to the hormones - like I had massive probs on different pills as my body couldn't take the change in hormones, and it took my body over 9 months to get vauguely normal after stopping my last pill...so I think I'm just wired badly for this frst trimester with all these hormones.

I'm still only 4 1/2 weeks...so waiting with baited breath for it to properly kick in, and very worried about it.

Not sure how to cheer you up...other than say you're not the only one, doesn't help I know.

hi anonmum

I am 10 weeks preg and have felt very ill!

I went to the dr as i suffered from horrid nausea, gone of food and am sleepy all of the time, he signed me off work for 2 weeks. I am due back to work tomorrow and am worried about how i will cope with the long days, nausea, tiredness and looking after my dd.

I went food shopping today and was having to stop myself being ill all round the shop, just looking at some foods makes me gag!

Its hard to imagine it but im sure that this stage will pass soon (thats what im telling myself)

Hevster · 16/06/2010 19:50

I have been signed on and off work like a yoyo due to HG this time (didn't have it last time) and am now working from home, only thing I can say is that although I don't feel any better now at 24 weeks I am coping with it a lot better due to medication etc so hang in there and hopefully things will improve

angels1 sorry to hear about that. I feel for you too as I had MC at 11 weeks after feeling sick all that time, although strangely I didn't throw up at all with that one. After DS, I made the same promise but here I am... Never again.

It's horrible but in a strange sense it's nice to know and I don't feel so alone in this sickness business. It gets so depressing for me sometimes. I'm trying to hold off medicine too. What mothers go through for love, eh? Yes, most certainly hope it will pass soon for all of us!

Are we allowed to be off and on with being signed off work? I can see my work being pretty unhappy about that and would rather I took a long sick leave, although that would be devastating for me as we need to pay our mortgage.

I was off sick nearly the whole nine months with dd and as long as I got gp to put 'pregnancy related' on sick note I got paid. I felt really bad about not going in but lost three stone and was in no fit state to go to work. Gp actually signed me off for three months as nothing helped.

I went to work for regular meetings and they were brilliant, didn't miss out on my holidays either , they tagged them on to the end of my maternity leave.

You should talk to HR at work to put your mind at rest.

I am now pregnant (after mc last year) and work have been really understanding again, they were great after mc as well.

angels1 · 17/06/2010 09:13

icedlemonmuffin does that mean if you have time off preg related it will get paid? I asked yesterday whether this 3 weeks will be paid, and was told where I work, the first 20 days I take off every year will be full pay, further on from that is half pay. As I'm part time I think I only get my work proportion of these days, so might get some days half pay. If it's pg related - do they need to pay you full pay? I know they don't have to put it on your sick record, but I'm not sure if it alters sick pay.

Icedlemonmuffin · 17/06/2010 10:39

Angels1 as I understand it you get paid because it doesn't really count as being 'sick' like flu, because it's pregnancy related, so normal sick policy doesn't count.

I would go back and talk to someone else who knows about pregnancy related issues not sick policy.

The first few weeks I was off sick my direct manager said I would get company sick then statuary (think I've spelt that wrong) sick but when I went to see HR person they said he was wrong and because it was pregnancy related it was dealt with completely different. As long as all my sick notes said pregnancy related I got paid full pay.

Hope this makes some sense!

Icedlemonmuffin · 17/06/2010 10:54

I should have added that this is my companys policy but it might not be the same for every company.

I know they can't discipline you over pregnancy related sickness, like they can do normal sickness, but pay might be different.

anonMum2 · 21/06/2010 10:58

My work place is the same.. I ended up with SMP last time and could barely afford to pay my mortgage as it's heavily dependent on my salary. I ended up struggling in to work for around 2 months before my sickness lifted.

Came into work today even though I feel absolulty c*p after throwing up non-stop this morning because I don't want to end up with SMP again. Wonder if I should call and speak to HR directly like Icedlemonmuffin did? nice nickname by the way

Hmmph.. just checked about the pay thing and absence procedure, and even though HR was trying to be helpful, it took a good half hour before she understood what I was trying to ask, as she kept repeating my sickness records and the company's sick policy to me. She even asked me towards the end if I was pregnant after I stated right at the beginning that I was pregnant and feeling extremely sick today, and used the term 'pregnancy morning sickness' all the way through our conversation.

From our conversation, I can only assume that they make no distinctions between a normal sickness and pregnancy sickness, although I cannot be sure as the HR person didn't seem to understand any of the pregnancy question I asked, and was too busy quoting sickness policy and records.

DH says that is discriminatory to cut our pay as pregnancy sickness is something that only women suffer with, not men, but wishful thinking eh? Life isn't fair, I guess. Anyway, have to stop taking things out of proportion whilst feeling awfully sick.

They cannot count pregnancy related illness towards any work sick quotas. Your DH is right - it's discrimination and is legislated against already.
