Would they already have tested for GD?

Hi all
I had my 24 week appt with MW today and had a ton of things to ask but never got around to it as was in a foul mood from being stressed at work (a whole other story..) but when she measured me I was measuring 29cm which I think is quite big, she said if still big at next appt she will send me for a scan.
I was meaning to ask about GD as it's in my family, would this already have shown up from my wee/ bloods if I had it? I'm assuming so...

I also meant to ask if fibroids can cause you to be a bit big... I wish I'd been more with it...

do you have your mw number? i know i can call mine to ask questions, so maybe you should give her a call and ask?

No, the test for gestational diabetes is separate from your other blood tests as it involves fasting and a very suggary drink! Ring the mw and ask for a GTT (the test for GD) if you are worried.
You do get a bit of a spurt at around 24 weeks so that may be the reason for measuring big, in the meantime try to cut down on sugary foods and eat a low GI diet.

Good plan, I'll have to ring her tomorrow. Cutting down on sugary foods sounds hard as all I want is sweets at the moment..!
Just read about the fasting for 12 hours thing, I really don't think I could make it! I get dizzy after about 4 hours without food, is this a really bad sign?!!

You should be getting your urine checked for sugars at every appointment. It's not as good a test as the GTT but it's a good marker.

Both the routine bloods and urine taken will have been checked for glucose levels - but the glucose tolerance test (GTT) is the "diagnostic" one. The urine test is not so good - it will pick up GD if you have high sugar levels, but at lower, but still abnormal levels of sugar in the blood, it doesn't always show up in the urine.

And of course, it can develop(or be found) At any stage of preg so the test just means "does not have GD at the moment"

If you are overweight, your risk is higher, but if you are overweight and active (excersise several times a week) your risk will be lower.

If you are worried, phone MV, explain any risk factors you might have (older age, weight, inactivity, processed diet, thirst etc) and see what she thinks.

Your midwife can take a blood test that shows what your sugar levels have been over the past few months/weeks - so if you can get that done periodically it will show whether or not you might have GD. If it shows a problem then you can go for the GTT fasting test.

Thanks guys,
it'd be good even to just rule it out as I'm not quite overweight and I'm reasonably healthy, maybe just a bit paranoid as have a sweet tooth and apparently big baby... hopefully worrying about nothing...
