Permanent/brazilian blow dry when pregnant?

MtnBikeChick · 16/06/2010 13:59

Hi there
I had a permanent blow dry in London in December 2008, and it lasted for absolutely ages and I loved the results. I am 34 weeks pregant and want to have it done again before my baby is born. My understanding is that it isn't a problem to have it done late in pregnancy but my salon in Knightsbridge are now saying they won't do it! Help! Has anyone had one done in central London whilst pregnant? Thanks so much!

what IS a permanent blow dry?!

driedapricots · 16/06/2010 17:24

and what is a brazilian blow dry??!! tell me you're talking about hair on your head..please?

PrivetDancer · 16/06/2010 17:26

ooh my hairdresser does these, I overheard her on the phone to somebody about them yesterday.

As far as I know they are chemical free so I can't imagine what the issue would be. People do tend to be overcautious about things with pregnant people though (understandably!).
Personally I dye my hair still but lots of people don't.

Kity · 16/06/2010 17:27

am also intrigued!

MtnBikeChick · 16/06/2010 17:40

It is an amazing treatment - basically I have thick, difficult to manage, slightly wavy and frizzy hair and it is essentially a relaxing/straightening treatment where they wash your hair, then they put this quite nice smelling gunk on it (mainly keratin as far as I know) and run hot irons over it. You can't wash your hair for 3 days but after that, it is amazing - so manageable and in fabulous condition. I have literally not plugged in my hair straighteners since December 2008 as a result! I am due for another one now though, and pre baby would be ideal. I know it only lasts about 3-6 months for some people but for me it lasted longer. It costs about £150 - £200, but for me it was - like laser hair removal - the best money I have ever ever spent!

Wow that sounds amazing! I'm definitely going to look into that. Sounds like the answer to all my hair trouble!

...er sorry I can't help with your original question about whether it is safe in preg. Think I will book one as a treat after I have my baby.

Lia1977 · 16/06/2010 19:08

Pls be careful because some hairdressers use formol in their treatment, which isnt good for anybody, let alone a pregnant woman. Just check at your salon before having the treatment.

driedapricots · 17/06/2010 14:50

oh, thank god for that, it's all innocent! well, yes if it's safe have it done before hand, cos it'll be the last thing you ever get round to doing for the next year or so after baby's born!!

sotough · 17/06/2010 16:36

hi MtnBike glad you posted this as it's been bothering me too! i am also addicted to the Brazilian Blow Dry. in my case it only lasts about three months but it makes the world of difference to how my hair looks and the amount of time i have to spend on it.
I think the concern is around whether or not the treatment contains formaldehyde.
i normally get mine done at Hari's on Brompton Road in London and rang them a while ago asking if they have formadehyde in the treatment and they said no but they seemed very vague about it and i didn't come away feeling particularly confident they knew what i was talking about....! i am well over due another treatment and my hair is driving me nuts and will only get worse, but i'm in the first trimester of a very very precious pregnancy (i've lost four) so i'm taking no risks at all. however, if i can get it done safely if and when i get past the 12 week point of my pregnancy i'd love to. could you let me know if you've managed to find out anything more? personally i'm sure it would be fine at your stage in pregnancy.

leepod · 17/06/2010 16:55

I don't have a response to your query, but agree it looks WOW on folks who have it done.

At the risk of derailing your thread, could you tell me bout your laser hair removal too please? Did you get IPL treatment? Has it worked? I am VERY keen to get it done but haven't known anyone to ask for the personal opinion (and am a bit wary of what people trying to sell me the treatment say)...

Am also considering the Phillips home laser product cos I figure it might work our cheaper if I zap bikini line, underarms and legs.

Good luck with finding a formaldehyde free permanent blow dry, and enjoy the pre baby pampering

PixieCake · 17/06/2010 17:19

Ooh yes, I'd like to know about IPL too. I was about to sign up before I got preg. Maybe we should start an another thread for this? Is there a beauty section?

potplant · 17/06/2010 17:22

I've never heard of this. Do you mean that you get your hair done then you don't need to wash it for 3 months?

MtnBikeChick · 17/06/2010 18:14

Leepod, Pixie - laser changed my life. I do have fair skin and dark brown hair (the best combination for laser) and had very hairy legs. It worked amazingly on my full legs and bikini line. I had it done about 4 years ago, and I never, ever remove hair from my legs or BL now. I can literally go for a swim, pop on a skirt or shorts without even thinking about whether I have hairy legs. This would have been a huge issue for me pre laser, and summer was a pain It works best on fair skin and dark hair due to the contrast between light and dark. It does hurt - be prepared for that, but not much worse than waxing. I had 6 sessions (spaced about 6 -8 weeks apart so it took almost a year in all) but I found that hardly any hairs grew back after just the first session. They do recommend you do a full course for best results though, and I think that is why I have stayed hair free ever since. I wouldn't bother with a home lazer device - I can't see how they would be any good. The industrial laser machines the therapists use are massive and are like proper medical devices. You have to be specially trained to use laser treatment, so I can't see how the home ones would have anywhere near the right strength of laser. I went to one of the sk:n clinics in London. I know they have good offers on packages of treatments and I was very pleased with the service. I also know they do a discount for people with PCOS (I don't have PCOS but my friend does and gets a discount on her treatments).

Potplant - not quite! You wash your hair as normal but it dries nice and straight and smooth of its own accord! After my last permanent BD I went to Africa and my hair dried straight even in the humidity and heat!

Thanks MtnBikeChick for your detailed response and the clinic recommendation. I can almost see a hairy (and I mean hairy!!) free summer in my future .

Pixie - I was also looking into it then discovered I was a few weeks pregnant. 9+4 weeks now but doubt it would be wise to do it now ....

Now -ahem- back on topic...

Thanks for indulging my detour MtnBikeChick

sotough · 03/07/2010 19:34

hello MtnBikeChick did you manage to get it done?
I went to get mine at the Ginger Group salon in London last week and when i asked if it was okay for pregnant women they said nooooooo . As i'm 12 weeks preg i had to content myself with an ordinary blow dry, which was hardly a substitute. i was a bit surprised and very disappointed as the reason I chose that salon is their website very specifically says the treatment they use doesn't contain formaldehyde, and contains lots of nice stuff etc. All the same I am glad they weren't just out for my money and put my pregnancy ahead of their bottom line. Still, my hair is looking dreadful without its nice treatment and i'm wondering how on earth i'm going to bear it for another six months. Small pain, of course, in return for a healthy pregnancy. Be interested to know what you did in the end.

emcotts · 19/10/2010 10:56

I'm picking this thread up a few months late but i've just booked my brazilian blow-dry and have been assured that it's completely safe during pregnancy.

The very clued-up lady at Rush on The Strand advised that the brazilian blowdry uses keratin - a natural product - and is entirely chemical free. It also barely touches your scalp.

I'm 8 weeks pregnant with my first and pretty cautious but I'm going to go for it. Looking forward to frizz free locks by the end of the week!

MumNilf · 20/12/2010 13:39

emcotts - i would just like to know if u did the brazilian blow dry and if everything is ok...

Pikaboo · 14/01/2011 14:13

Hello folks,
I just would like to share my experiance with Brazilian Blow dry and Yuko, I have done both. First- my hair tipe- it's wavy, fizzy when wet weather, not very unruly but difficult to manage.I am white european. I did Yoko in Nov 2008, it was the best hair treatment that I have ever done. It did wreck hair a bit where it was weak (very ends), but I did haircut straight after and my hair looked very smooth, silky and as straight as japanise girls have. Since Nov 2008 to mid 2010 I have not used straightnet even once and I did not to style it either! Good buy curls! Hair usually curls up at the ends the most, so when my hair grew back, the untreated part at the top stayed straight because of the weight of the hair. Only when my hair grew back by 2/3, that was when I started to style my hair with hair dryer. I still did not need straightner as now my hair was treated almost only at the ends and looked straight, and blow dry was still actually enough. When I have Yuko just done, I did not have to style it at all! I did not even have hair brush in my hands! What a time saver! At the end of 2010, November, I did Brazilian keratin treatment. I did not wash my hair for 3-4 days after, and then when I washed it first time, my hair looked very shiny, smooth, but not idealy straight, and I had to style it from wash one! I could not just blow the hot air to what ever part, and it will stay nice, I had to take brush and style it. The fiziness appeared after 2 month even thou I was using recommended shampoo and conditioner. To do Yuko is a big rick because if you in hands of unexperianced person, your hair can end up looking bad, but if it's done properly, OMG! It's GREAT! With brazilian, yes, it's ok, it is more of relaxation and fizziness treatment then straightening, so you will still have you curls and waves, much less thou. Do not expect your hair to be straight at all, but it will look very healthy and very shiny. I hope that my message will help you to choose between treatments and help you to consider and see all the ricks and money spending and time spending. As for me, I want my hair straight, so will go again for Yoko, and also when hair grows back by 2/3 will do brazilian, to get rid of fizziness. I had done my Yuko in Bricklane salon in London (i dont remember the name but will dig it out for you if asked) paid £360 (long hair) +£20 tip, as it took 5-6 hours. Brazilian was done in Pedersen, paid £80.00 via Groupon.

sh77 · 14/01/2011 15:40

For all you ladies looking to pamper yourselves, as previous poster mentioned, check out groupon. They have some amazing salon deals. I missed out on a brazilian blow dry this week.

lilly13 · 14/01/2011 17:58

Try Richard Ward at Duke of York Square in Chelsea. Did you salon give you an explanation why they would not do it?

annaclrichards · 07/04/2011 22:16
