Medicines for baby

storminabuttercup · 16/06/2010 13:07

me and another pg friend were talking the other day about what we have bought already for the baby. Now i'm a bit soft with buying stuff and have just bought EVERYTHING i can think of - even stuff that maybe the baby doesnt need.

Well this friend asked if i had bought 'all the medicines?' i was like eh? she said 'you know all the medicines that the baby will need?'

Now am i being thick here? I dont buy medicines in advance for me and dp - we have paracetamol in but thats it. Do i need special things for a baby? I honestly thought i was organised but now im a bit confused....

what does she mean?

The medicines etc we have in the house for 'just in case' are:
Calpol
Baby nurofen (for fevers)
lactulose (after DD had awful constipation when she was teeny)
Vicks room vapouriser (ok, not a medicine but v useful when they get their first cold)
Infacol/Gripe water (DD also had colic)
Sudocrem (nappy rash, sore skin, dry patches etc)
Teething granules (needed them from about 5 months onwards)

To be honest, you really don't need to have them in, but we don't live near a pharmacy etc so we always have more in than we need so if we come down with something we don't have to traipse out for them.

we live pretty close to a few 24 hour supermarkets - but will maybe get some of these closer to the time (only 30 weeks)

cheers x

We have a 24 hour pharmacy near us, so I probably won't bother to get much more than Sudacrem at first.

I certainly won't bother with homeopathic teething granules as I don't believe in homeopathy and get quite irate that the baby stuff managed to escape the newish labelling regulations on homeopathic products (new homeopathic products can't say that they are for a specific problem - e.g. teething! - as they contain no active ingredients anyway).

Good lord!

Storm, most of the stuff on the above list can't be given to newborns anyway. The only thing I'd say you might want to get in advance is Sudocrem.

We have most of the stuff on the above list in the house but only because we have built up a store cupboard of stuff bought as and when DS has needed it.

ah - jacks - sudocrem i alreay have :-)

Right thats settled NO medicines until baby is born.

Friend is one of those ppl who takes all the over the counter stuff under the sun where as i battle on with a few paracetamol - i refuse to pay for all those so called remedies when most of them make me feel worse

i just thought i was missing something

ps - i would have checked with a pharmacist not just given them to baby - just so you all know im not crazy

You can give Calpol etc from 2 months and will probably be told by the nurse/HV to get some in following the first set of jabs at 8 weeks. Over the counter cold stuff can't be given till 3 months so I really wouldn't bother getting anything other than sudocreme at the moment.

Hevster · 16/06/2010 14:14

calpol or infant paracetamol form 2 months and ipbruefen (infant) from 6 months, these are the only things we have and DD is now nearly 3

as everyone said, get some medicines in after 6 weeks or so - no need to worry about them yet.
But it IS handy to have a stock in the house. When your baby gets a fever, it can come on quickly, and you might not be in a position to quickly nip out to buy some (eg if youve both had a glass of wine, you wont be able to drive anywhere). Plus, you wont always WANT to nip out, so best to be prepared, just in case.

Infacol is OK to use from birth, and you might well need it for a couple of weeks, so get some of that.
