low blood sugar?

I don't know if this is low blood sugar or not, seeing a dr about a few things later this week so will be discussing it then just want to find out if there's anything practical I can do in the meantime or any info I can go armed with would be good.

I get a real sudden need to eat and the only thing that gets rid of that feeling is sweets, chocolate or a fizzy drink. I'm making a conscious effort to eat before I get hungry to try and stop this, but it's still not working. I've had a bit of a snack before picking ds2 up from nursery this morning and then had lunch as soon as I got home, but even while I was eating my lunch I could feel it coming on. I suddenly feel really sick, get a 'hot flush' I shake, it's so bad that I can't hold something still, for example I've just had a mars bar but had to get dp to open it for me as my hands were shaking too much. I feel like I feel quite clammy and my vision is a little blurred.

Is this something to do with gestational diabetes? (diabetes can be high or low sugar can't it?). Or something less sinister. It's quite scary the sudden intensity of it.

Are you getting a urine sample tested at your appointment? I would, just to check. And definitely talk to the doctor about it.

It may be low bp related though - low bp and low blood sugar can be quite related, and the rush from a jolt of sugary foods can help your body to raise your bp. Maybe try having some orange juice or gatorade with you?

Hi, I often get like this even when not pregnant and so I've been advised (by a naturopath, not GP so don't know how scientific it is) to eat every 2 / 3 hours - mainly protein snacks eg houmous, nuts, protein bars rather than sugary things. It keeps my blood sugar on an even path rather than lots of peaks and troughs. Seems to work, though now pregnant I have to eat even more often.

I got tested for diabetes years ago but they didn't find anything. Though worth checking and mentioning at your doc's.

Thanks for the advice, will take a urine sample with me in case, does it need to be fmu or is anytime ok?

I'm a type 1 diabetic and the feelings you're describing sound very similar to the sensations I get when I'm experiencing a low blood sugar. You can get some info from a urine test but a blood test will give you a much clearer picture of whats going on. Discuss your symptoms with your GP to put your mind at rest or get the treatment you need xx
