Epidurals - anyone had a positive experience?

I'm thinking of having an epidural as I'm such a wuss when it comes to pain - I have trouble coping with period pain, so I don't fancy my chances in labour! I read an article interviewing a woman who had had a lovely, stressfree birth with an epidural and then a very traumatic second birth at a different hospital that were very anti-epidural.

Reading the MN info on it wasn't very helpful as it outlined lots of risks and possible downsides, all of which sounded horrible, but didn't make clear how likely these downsides were.

So I'd really appreciate some feedback while I try to decide what to do

after a hardcore 8 hours of constant strong contractions I caved and had an epidural and have absolutely no regrets, I was over tired and it gave me the rest I needed, although it didn't fully work, and took 2 attempts to have an effect it was bliss to be able to feel the birth with a little pain and not to be distraught. my birth partners both agreed it was the right action and they both relaxed as well. I had a natural birth with no problems, about 2 hours later. I personally think a happy mum is a better birth whether you choose drugs or not it just has to be the right thing for you. The happier you are the happier the baby and the easier the labour.

My second child is due in 12 weeks and i'll try for just water pool but i'm definately open to another epidural if I feel I need one. good luck with whatever you decide.

I had epidurals with both mine - quick labours (seven-and-a-half and five-and-a-half hours respectively) and easy deliveries - let it wear off slightly towards the end so could feel to push, but no pain iyswim. Wouldn't contemplate giving birth without one - absolutely loved it, no negative aspects at all.
