I had this (around 8 weeks, I think, for a few weeks) - it was a bit alarming, but the MW told me at booking in appt that it was my body making sure I was getting an increased amount of oxygen.

It wasn't that my breathing was obstructed in any way - just that I seemed to need to take more and deeper breaths (huffing is a good description), esp after climbing the stairs or similar. Annoying if you're in the middle of a conversation!

It seemed to get better after the mid teens. Either I got used to it without noticing, or didn't need to breathe as deeply, I dunno.

Is it a slightly breathless feeling? I have been having this, had put it down to going from pretty fit pre-pg to being housebound for months on end with N&V, and therefore plummeting fitness levels! But barkfox's explanation makes more sense!

I'm 8 weeks pregnant and have also had this. It's weird isn't it. I'm a teacher and was talking to the class today, reading a little from the text book and I felt quite out of breath. It's almost like I need to yawn to get a full breath if that makes sense. Is that how you feel? I also wondered if it was because i have given up smoking and thought maybe all the crap is loosening from my lungs. Sorry if that sounds gross.

Yes vickrick, I have been getting out of breath reading stories to my DS! Weird!

ReshapeWhileDamp · 15/06/2010 20:22

Yes, I've been breathless for weeks now. (am 12 wks)

Just something to think about - I was breathless through my whole pregnancy, and it got steadily worse and worse but whenever I mentioned it to my midwife she just said "well, you are pregnant". Eventually, when my 36 week bloods were done they realised my iron levels were down at about 5, I was dangerously anaemic and that was why I could not say a sentence without sounding like I was having an asthma attack. Keep it in mind, if it keeps getting worse I would have your bloods checked as I ended up in and out of hospital on drips and blood transfusions in the final weeks, which was not fun!

Thanks for the advice thelennox. Are there any other symptoms of anaemia?

General tiredness, pale, lethargy. I also found toilet going really tricky. Problem is, they are all symptoms of pregnancy as well. You should get your bloods checked pretty regularly anyway - I was a victim of a hospital hiccup, so my GP was never told how low my bloods were till it was too late. If you have a good diet, and take folic acid and asorbic acid, then you should be fine. And avoid caffeine straight after meals cause it inhibits iron absorption.
