Hi there,

Just got a BFP for DC2 over the weekend - hooray, but also OMG at fear of having HG this time round.

With DS1 I was hospitalised 10 times for dehydration between 6-14wks and then got it relatively under control with meds (ondansetron) after trying everything else on offer first.

My question is...after reading about HG second time round some women say they started meds before they had symptoms and this meant they didn't have to go into hospital. Has anyone had experience of this?? About to go to a new GP, having just moved areas, and am worried that no GP will prescribe me ondansetron from 4wks preg as a precautionary measure. But also don't want to have to go through the battle to find the right thing like last time. And this time I have a toddler to think of too.

atm I am feeling queasy on and off, no vomitting yet, but am 4+3 and sickness kicked in at 5wks last time.

very worried! any advice appreciated.

TBH I would wait to see if the sickness kicks in and if it does, then demand the same med from your GP. There's no need to wait until you're dehydrated and needing hospital treatment - see the doctor after the first day of bad sickness! Alternatively, you could ask your GP for a prescription so you have it ready if/when the sickness starts, but not take it if not needed.

But you may be better this time round.

Congrats .

I don't think a GP is going to give you anything before the really bad symptoms have even started.

BUT IME GPs are more willing to give medication if you had it last time, i.e. as japhrimel says you shouldn't have to get to the stage of being hospitalised.

I hope it's not as bad for you this time.

Thanks for the advice. I think I'll try and get a prescription for just in case secnario. Obviously dream situation would be that I don't need to take anything!

Hi
Like you I had HG in my last pregnancy
and unfortunately it kicked in again around 5 weeks, I ended up at emergency GP Vomiting in the waiting room and I was dehydrated so they gave me medication straight away.
I have also been having weekly accupuncture sessions, which have helped massively.
3 weeks ago I could hardly stand up due to exhaustion and dehydration, and now my life is getting back to normal.
( still vomiting at least once a day and have nausea mostly in the evenings even with tablets) but its not as bad as it was

Good luck and get the meds from the GP

hi caramellokoalalover

I think I've spoken to you on another thread about something like this yesterday, as I was signed off from work for 3 weeks yesterday with HG.

Can things really be much different wigth different pregnancies? I hope you're OK this time.

I can only remember last time that well before week 6 I was feeling really really sick. I'm in week 4 and have been feeling sick on and of, some days worse than others. Since knowing that I don't have to work through it now, I must admit it has felt a bit better (maybe stress makes it worse). I feel really guilty for not working now, when possibly I could manage it. I'm scared stiff that it'll get as bad as last time, or worse, but also I keep hoping it might not be as bad...do people actually have HG one time and then sick free the next?

I've been having relfexology in recent months, and have now booked some in for every week, in the hope that this helps. I tried accupuncture in the past but wasn't very effectuve on me, but different things fo different people I guess.

I'm probably just thinking about this far too early and it will just kick in in a week or so. It's just waiting to see what happens that's so frustrating, isn't it? Keep me informed caramel.

a
x

Thanks for your post gateacre. I've booked to see my GP Tuesday and I think I'll ask for a prescription regardless of whether I've started being sick or not, just so I know I have it if I need it. And great tip about the acupuncture. I wonder if the GP will refer me?? Or am I dreaming! Will definitely look into it.

angels, . Glad you're feeling a little better now you're resting. Please don't feel guilty about not working, this is not your choice or fault. Hope DH is behaving and dishing out the sympathy now too

You can have HG with the first pregnancy then not the next. Every pregnancy is different, but don't want to get your hopes up, I think it is the exception rather than the rule not to have it again. At least second time round you know a lot more about it and I think as I know I survived it the first time, and know that it's worth it in the end, I will (hopefully) manage better this time! Trying to stay positive for now anyway!

I'm now on my third pregnacy and each time the sickeness had got worse. I'm currently 29weeks and still taking cyclizine daily.
I found with my GP that I had to demand certain meds... say I was aware of risks but I wanted/needed it.
I was refused Zofran by one GP at my surgery so I just saw a different GP the next time and got it!
I did tend to get a bit emotional in there so they prob gave it to me just to get rid of me!
If you are worried they won't give it until syptoms worsen just exaggerate how you feel now and then you'll have it just in case.
There is nothing worse than waiting around for you GP appointment when you are constantly sick!
