Hoping someone can help. Am 36 weeks on Thursday, all has been well so far. However, today i've started having excruciating pains across the top of my bump, mainly when i move or laugh, cough etc, but its now also started happening randomly.

It lasts a few seconds at a time, and i can hardly breathe when it happens, then doesn't hurt at all once its gone.

It doesn't feel like its my ribs, its the actual bump iyswim? Please help! Thanks.

Um, I had something similar but midwife didn't seem to think it was much. Give them a call. I know its the standard response but it really is the best course of action. Good luck.

braxton hicks?

Pootles2010 · 14/06/2010 12:26

I did think it might be braxton hicks, but i do have those as well and they're totally different. When i have bh they're uncomfortable, but i can cope with them iyswim? These are so painful, they make me cry out in pain if that doesn't sound too stupid, I've never known pain like it! Its so wierd that they're gone so soon as well.

Do you think it could be a sort of cramp/ ligament pain? I had a really painful bump when I shouted at my husband
( - you had to be there) and I think I pulled a muscle!!!

TBH I'd get it checked out, it doesn't hurt. Could be just aches and pains, but I know pre-eclampsia can cause bump pain at the top and it's not something you can guess at without BP/wee test etc.

I think I had a pain like this a bit earlier (I'm now 37wks, think it was around 34-35wks). I mentioned it to my mw as I was wondering whether it was due to muscles separating (they are designed to do this, btw!) but she thought it more likely to be digestion, I think, ie stomach being more cramped/acid. She suggested I eat smaller meals... have you noticed a pattern to when it happens? Otherwise it could be another stage of stretching, I find that some parts of me can be sore for a day or two (eg tummy button in last week) then get better as the stretching stops again. There's also something called rib flare, when ribs have to move out to accommodate baby - could it be this?
