i would imagine you are a higher priority in regards to housing, but that doesn't guarantee you a house/flat anywhen soon... depends who else is waiting
my cousin was in a similar situatin and lived in a hostel for several months before she was given a flat

cluckyduck · 11/06/2010 20:25

Hi,

Congratulations on the pregnancy. Your local CAB will be able to give you advice on the housing situation, or your local council.

I had my DD at 20, and I lived with my parents for the first 3 years, so thats a possible idea, if its do-able in your situation.

Good luck.

bristols · 11/06/2010 20:27

There may be a mother and baby unit that you can go into which might be better for you than the hoste1. How far gone are you? Your midwife shou1d be ab1e to give you some advice.

BTW, congrats!

Purplebuns · 11/06/2010 20:27

It all depends on your local council. You won't be a priority until the baby is born and then you won't be top of the pile at all!

However, they may have a scheme that will lend you your first months rent and deposit for private accomodation.

Also, if you need temporary/emergency housing than it is likely it will be a hostel/B&B I am afraid.

Do you have a SW? They might be able to get you into a mum and baby place, which would be a good start, and can be supportive helping you find somewhere better.

15 weeks? Hope the sickness etc has stopped now, and you're starting to bloom

cluckyduck · 11/06/2010 20:44

Where are you staying now?

15 weeks is the beginning of the nicer stage of pregnancy, in my experience

lauraloo171 · 11/06/2010 20:49

yer i have a support worker, but not seen her yet as iv just moved into this new hostel.

ymca, many people are sayin it nicer stage, im sooooo not seeing it lol

Where are you in the country? Local authorities have different provision; in Brighton, where I work, we have hostels, but pregnant women don't stay in these once they are 27 weeks pregnant but are moved to either mother and baby accommodation which is supported housing for young mums and their babies, or their own flat with floating support (someone who comes and visits and helps with form filling, benefits etc). The flats are not council owned but are normally managed by the council.

Do you have a Housing Options Officer or Homeless Persons Officer? They should be able to help. Alternatively there might be a youth advice centre in your town and they could help.

Lots of luck with everything

northwest (near liverpool) i dont think we have anything like that up here.

On the basis that you're online to be here on MN, google your local council then look for their pages about housing etc.

Until you're 18 you wouldn't be able to rent as you wouldn't be legally able to sign a contract.

However, your support worker / Social Services should be able to get some sort of mother and baby accommodation, or even your own property under licence until you turn 18.

Make sure you spend your grant money carefully - get as much as possible second hand / off ebay.

Don't forget you will also be eligable to apply for Community Care Grant (often £500+) to help with costs of moving into a new home - ie carpets, white goods, etc. It's worth getting help to fill it in - I've known people be refused who clearly should've been awarded money.

Are you anywhere near Kirkby? The YES project in Centre63 is brilliant and they could give you loads of help.

The Youth Enquiry Service - they will help you with any housing or benefit issues. They are based in centre 63 on Old Hall Lane.
