5 weeks - back pain and cramping - how long til the bleeding starts?

I think it's more than the usual cramping you get at this time and feels like my last early MC, though milder and not as constant. I can't remember how long I had the pain for before the bleeding started. The pain started late afternoon.

Please an anyone shed any light??

Partly so I can expect it and also to know if the bleeding doesn't start, whether that means i'm probably safe as it were.

I'm sorry you're going through this Brownpaperandstring. Fortunately I haven't had any experience of this but there is a Talk topic on miscarriage and I'm sure some of the ladies on there will be able to offer you some helpful advice.
Hope everything turns out to be okay. Best of luck.

I got loads of cramping at start of this preg and, like you, I've had an early MC before too. I didn't know I was preg this time until I was already 5 weeks so I was sure I just had water retention and bad cramps signalling the beginning of a bad AF. It never arrived and a few days later I did a test.

Anyway, just goes to show that cramps can be caused by a lot of different things, try not to expect the worst straight away. Maybe you can get referred for a scan at the early pregnancy unit by your GP to put your mind at rest if you're still feeling cramping over next few days?

Best of luck with it all.

I'm so sorry you're going through this BPAS. You know you can get all sorts of weird cramping in early pregnancy.

FWIW, in my most recent two miscarriages , I had brown discharge, then bright red blood, several hours before the pains began.

I would have expected bleeding before cramps actually.

Keeping everything crossed for you.

RipMacWinkle · 10/06/2010 22:09

As others have said it doesn't necessarily mean bad news.

However, when I had early MC I had painful cramping which began on the Wednesday and bleeding started on the Friday.

Fingers crossed that you're just getting implantation cramping (which I did get with DD, she's now 6 months)

BrownPaperandString · 11/06/2010 09:42

Thank you so much for replying - what do you think the difference is between MC cramps and normal 5 week PG cramps? Do you think they feel the same?

Also I think the water retention has dropped off - my legs are thinner (can tell by how my jeans feel!) - that can't be good either.

I had terrible cramps with my dd now 8.This followed a mc at 12 weeks. I couldnt even tell people i was pregnant in a happy way. It went on and on till 12 weeks when i had a huge bleed!!Vey strange. I am now 6wks with a suprise baby and have had period like cramps since my p was due. It wierd and worrying. I take paracetamol and also bought those cheap tests and do one occasionally just to check if its still positive.
Hope that helps.

I'm really sorry you are going theough this, but it may not be completely bad news I had bad cramps and backache from 5 up to 9 weeks which has eased off and now in 12 weeksthey seem to be different for everyone but I was sure I was going to MC. I also lost a lot of weight at the beginning of my pregnancy and the worry may be contributing to your legs feeling thinner.
I mentored a young girl who had addictions and she had bleeding and cramps regularly but was fine and went to full term for a healthy baby.
I can't imagine how worried you are but go to a doctor or midwife and see about tests or a scan they may be able to help you.
I understand you are prob preparing for the worst so if it does happen you are more prepared but don't give up hope completely.
Goodluck, really feel for you at this time

CherryPie3 · 11/06/2010 11:52

With my mc I started bleeding (bright red and gloopy - sorry if tmi) before any pain at all.
I wouldn't have even known if I hadn't gone to the toilet for a wee.

I know you're probably trying to expect the worst/hop for the best and I really hop you get good news!!

Try and keep your chin up hun, we're all thinking of you!

CherryPie3 · 11/06/2010 11:53

both 'hops' should have said hope.

sorry for my bad typing!!

BrownPaperandString · 11/06/2010 13:30

Thank you so much for your lovely replies. It's all so strange - I don't remember all the cramping with my other 2 successful pregnancies. I still have them - they were stronger this morning but not too bad at all and are now v mild / not there at this precise moment. No bleeding but a tiny bit of mucus which I usually get before my period comes, i get more and more and then with blood is the usual pattern for me. I can't remember if mucus at this stage is normal anyway!

If I haven't had any bleeding by 7 weeks, I'll go for a scan but there's no point at the moment I don't think.

Worry worry worry!!!!!

Ledkr - did you have backache too with your DD or just cramps?
SeoMum - did you cramps and backache turn out to be nothing?

SeoMum · 11/06/2010 13:52

Yes I think they were just stronger than normal (hard to tell as can't compare) but I spoke to my midwife and 2 family members who are midwifes (I tend to stress out about things and need to get them clarified by lots of people) and it was fine, eased off at 9 weeks to be replaced by sickness! Joys of pg
I really hope it all turns out well for you x x

SeoMum · 13/06/2010 15:07

Hi BrownPaperandString just wondering how you are doing?
I was talking to my MIL about my pregnancy and she told me about her friend at work who had a very difficult pregnancy they even gave her a stitch to prevent miscarriage as she had a lot of bleeding in the first 12 weeks.

If you haven't already you should go to the doctors or MW and get there help, it could be normal and you could have a healthy pregnancy that goes full term or you may need some extra TLC.
Really am thinking of you nad hope it all turns out ok x x
