I'm 12 wks and normally quite a healthy eater, but since knowing I'm pregnant and the rubbish morning/all day sickness feeling, I just keep wanting to eat Mcdonalds, crisps, sweets etc....
I am starting to worry that it's not good for the baby. Am trying to eat some fruit and salads etc aswell most days,
should I be worried...??

No don't stress. The baby will take what it needs from your body. Try to eat healthy food as well as junk, but it's all energy and better than eating nothing.

FWIW I'm pg with no 3 and while I never had a sweet tooth before I am eating SOO MUCH RUBBISH NOW.

If you are concerned you could take a pregnancy vitamin supplement.

Often what you crave is things your body needs anyway. Don't stress and congratulations!

Mercedes519 · 10/06/2010 14:54

I always comfort myself the baby takes the good stuff first (like calcium etc) and then we get what's left. Mind you I've eaten sooooo much cheese lately...

I also take a supplement - can't do any harm .

Enjoy and don't fret - the morning sickness will pass and then you're eating should get back to normal.

nervousnewmummy · 10/06/2010 15:14

thanks guys

I get sooo worried about stuff, being my first time. I'm taking a pregnancy supplement vitamin and extra calcium etc, so hopefully it's getting what it needs.

Am hoping when the sickness fades I'll get back to eating better, good intentions and all that

thanks for your support

I was the same as you in my first pregnancy and so bought the innocent smoothies and had 2 (different coloured) ones for breakfast which meant I had consumed 4 of my 5 a day and then I ate what I liked without worrying. Had a very healthy 8lb8 DD.

berrycravings · 10/06/2010 18:48

I'm the same. 10+5 and now only eating bread/cheese/tomatoe soup/potato and only drinking water (used to hate water)

Been worrying about lack of fruit and veg in my diet, but until the sickness/nausea passes there's not too much I can do! I'm hoping to eat lots of lovely salads and summer fruits as the sickness goes. Fingers crossed!!

I think during the early stages, eat what you can keep down?
I suffered morning sickness with both mine, and think my stomach was gratefull for anything !?
Second trimester I was really healthy with both - loads of fruit , fish, veg etc.
But I have been naughty the past 3 weeks ( now 38wks) and can't stop eating chocolate!
I now it will make me put on extra weight, but can't help myself!
I feel so guilty, but then I think, oh well, only a few weeks to use the 'im pregnant' excuse, before I will get slimmer agin!
( well that's the plan)

Lavitabella · 10/06/2010 19:06

You are not alone!

I am a usual healthy eater and this is my 1st pregnancy too. I have been craving chips with cheese, crisps, pot noodles and chocolate milkshake!

I'm sure other people do it but I've always liked having a nose in other people's shopping trolleys but lately when I look at my own I am just it is full of crap!!

I seem to have given up any semblance of a normal diet and reverted to my college years!

LittleMissSnowShine · 10/06/2010 19:39

I'm just like you, del! I had first trimester from hell, sick as a dog, lost loads of weight. Then tried to make up for it in second trimester with lots of fruit, veg, vitamin tablets and Ovaltine. Now I'm def slipping into some bad habits, but with only 10 weeks to go the end is in sight and I'm still walking a couple of times a week and going swimming so I'm sure the odd take away or chocolate binge isn't going to do any real harm!!

Have a friend though who ended up with gestational diabetes so I'm conscious of not going crazy - like a big slice of cake is fine, the whole cake in one sitting..not so much lol

MistyBell · 11/06/2010 10:27

I was the same early on in both my pregnancies. I think the most important thing is to not over eat.

I saw a good post on how to have a healthy pregnancy, wp.me/pS00T-Yy. Worth a read.

PixieCake · 11/06/2010 15:52

Hi nervousnewmummy,

I had exactly the same thing. I normally have a healthy diet but as soon as I got pregnant I was desperate for pizza, coke, chips, chocolate biscuits etc.

My DH kept telling me off, saying it was bad for the baby. I really went off fruit and veg (even the smell of fruit teas made me feel sick). I did worry a bit about the baby because I knew my diet was poor, although I did take a pregnancy vitamin every day.

Was also worried about how fat I would get!

But the good news is that it eased off at about week 14/15. I'm actually now craving salads and fruit - result!

Probably something in the theory that your body tells you what it needs.

MyThumbsHaveGoneWeird · 11/06/2010 19:58

I craved salads from about week 3 to 6. To the extent that I actually ran home from work one day to make one before I knew I was pregnant.

Then from week 6 my appetite plunged to zero and the nausea kicked in. Since then the only thing I fancy is milk chocolate, cheese and tomato sandwiches, tomato soup and syrupy drinks. The thought of red meat makes me really sick - which is weird, the baby must need iron right?

I'm just hoping my appetite will kick back into gear soon, and that I will lose the ability to eat 100g of chocolate in a sitting.

debka · 11/06/2010 20:00

100g? I can do 250 !

xMrsSx · 11/06/2010 20:05

100g?? 250g?? Mere amateurs!!

TettyLouBar · 11/06/2010 20:07

I'm 9/40 and suffer from really strong all-day morning sickness, but never actually vomit, just feel horrid all day. The only time I feel better is if I'm nibbling on something. I get sooo hungry and have this carb craving thats driving me nuts.
DD1 is 2YO this month and its taken til now to get my pregnancy weight off from that pregnancy and since Ive discovered I'm pregnant again Ive been determined not to put on as much weight. But the nausea is just terrible.

Ive got a really bloated belly which I'm convinced is more carb bloating than anything else. You name it, Ive eaten it, chips, curry and rice, bolognese and pasta, beans on toast. I'm normally such a healthy eater, I eat loads of veg and fruit but the thought of that makes me feel sick as a dog

sassy34264 · 11/06/2010 23:55

I had terrible nausea all day long for the first 3 months. I lost 8 pounds and the only thing i wanted to eat was stodge. Chips, pasta, bread, potatoes. (not normally something i eat, due to IBS) I couldn't stand anything sweet at all. I couldn't even stomach juice. If i dared to eat something sweet i would spend hours craving stodge and even if i ate lots of stodge the feeling wouldn't go away. It felt like i had prader-willi syndrome because food would be on my mind so much i couldn't concentrate. Drove me bonkers.
I'm now 6 months and most definately cured- I have just ate a 500ml tub of ben and jerry's chocolate ice cream!!! I don't even feel sick.

LittleMissSnowShine · 12/06/2010 08:04

Icecream, cheese, chocolate, cream buns etc - All full of dairy so baby must need calcium

Chips, pizza, pastries, cake, pasta etc - loads of complex carbs. Again...baby must need them!!

As long as you take the vitamins as well and you don't sit down to 4 fish suppers in one sitting i'd say pretty much eat what you like!!

MamaBubs · 12/06/2010 21:40

I have been EXACTLY the same. Normally a healthy eater but the thought of a nice piece of salmon just wants me to throw up. I've never had Mcdonalds in my life, but am now a regular eater of quarterpounders, am loving bacon burgers, haribo sweets and for lunch today I had a double helping of sausage and chips - my Mum nearly fell through the floor!!

I am 13 weeks today and wondering if I will get to wanting healthy food, but I'm just going to go with the flow at the mo, and hope that drinking ribena and eating the odd plum will help
