I'm about 6 weeks pregnant and have 2 work dinners in the next week. Anyone got any tips on avoiding the alcohol so as to not give the game away. Do you think I should pretend to drink or refuse iving some sort of made up excuse? What did you do?

Say you're on antibiotics?

Poledra · 07/06/2010 16:57

Drive.

ANTagony · 07/06/2010 16:58

Antibiotics so can't drink?

Driving?

Dieting?

Poledra · 07/06/2010 16:58

Sorry, that was a little terse! Pg or not, I refuse to drink at all when I'm driving. Therefore, I drove myself everywhere when pg.............

SebbysMum · 07/06/2010 16:58

Ah, no car as live in London, and work-funded cab home.

Driving.

Strong painkillers.

Hungover.

Find someone to swap glasses with periodically so it looks like your glass is going down.

Get one drink, then carry it around (move between groups if possible) and say 'I've got one thanks' when offered.

kittyonthebeam · 07/06/2010 17:11

I took one drink, one sip to clink glasses with people, then carried it around all evening, making trips to the loo, throwing it out, getting a new one, then pretending my head was spinning and I went home early

Oh and congratulations!

RooBear · 07/06/2010 17:13

congrats! non alcholic cocktail? lemonade and say theres spirts in there? say you have a big night out later in the week and are saving yourself for it?

HazB2010 · 07/06/2010 17:23

Congratulations! I'd go for the milling around with a glass of wine option - no one will notice it's not being drunk : ) Got a wedding on Saturday (am also 6 weeks-ish), but I'll be driving anyway. Phew...

southeastastra · 07/06/2010 17:26

just say you're not drinking, bit grim you have to make up an excuse not to, unless you're pre-known as a lush

detoxing before summer holiday?

suzym1984 · 07/06/2010 17:38

I would get a lime and soda/ diet coke and pretend it is a real drink (but I was a vodka drinker!)

If there is wine with the meal maybe use anitbiotics, or hold up soft drink and say you'd rather stick with spirits/ not mix drinks etc.

Failing that, just drive and claim to have an early start in the morning, or stomach bug so dont wanna stay too late.

Hope you have a lovely time anyway

skidoodly · 07/06/2010 17:47

Saying you can't drink because you are on antibiotics is like carrying a sign reading "up the duff".

Unfair but true.

SebbysMum · 07/06/2010 18:21

It is just so difficult. My managers always said they knew I was pregnant last time from the first work dinner where I wasn't drinking, so yes, they are watching I think. I'm a terrible lier. I might sit with a glass of wine in front of me and if anyone asks claim a bit of a headache

accept a drink then they won't be suspicious, then don't drinking / tip it down the loo
order non-alcoholic lager and have it ina a glass
have vodka and coke without the vodka..
Was at a wedding on saturday and DH got hammered by polishing off all the booze I was given by friends and swapping it with soft drinks!
antibiotics good - but you need to make sure you've been dashing to the loo (easy when preg) lots and complaining about pain, plus said in a loud voice you're off to the GP...

clareanna · 07/06/2010 18:34

sorry - to make it look like a kidney infection - pregnant women are devious....

If you resort to the antibiotics one give them some details - if you were for example on metronidazole for a tooth infection you really wouldn't be able to drink - it has the same effect as antabuse (the stuff they give alcoholics to make them ill if they drink)! It's the only one people might understand (tis called the 'disulfiram-like reaction' if your colleagues like all the juicy details!) Have fun!

androbbob · 07/06/2010 22:46

Agree the antibiotics is a lame excuse - reads as you are pg! Not an easy one to solve if you are usually a drinker! I would go with accepting one drink and not drinking it - getting a soft drink - but all depends if a do where you can circulate rather than a sit down do!

btw - congrats!
