Weight gain 14kg at 32 weeks - feeling depressed

I'm 32 weeks with 1st baby and feeling generally down and grumpy today so apologies for moaning. Just been weighed at the doctor's and have put on 14 kg - which is more than the 12.5kg I'm supposed to put on over the whole pregnancy and I've still got 8 weeks to go. I haven't been overeating and have tried to stay active (although have been very tired and slow lately) and I'm feeling like I've failed somehow by putting on too much weight (I know this is irrational and probably hormonal). It's made worse because I already have a high BMI - I weigh much more than you'd think from looking at me (doctor's often weight themselves to make sure the scales are right when they weigh me) even though I am size 14 normally and before I was pregnant was quite active and could run (maybe more like a jog) 10k.

Should I just try and do more exercise in these last few weeks (force myself down to the pool) or am I beating myself up unnecessarily?

They are certainly not used to seeing 6 month pregnant women, who look 9 months that for sure. Luckily i don't let it upset me. My DP says i look 'bogging' (no pregnancy glow for me) and my brother reckons i should have stars orbiting me (ie, i'm a planet) and my MIL just bursts out laughing whenever she sees me -she finds it amusing that i will get even bigger (we are really close). So i suppose with this lot in my family, a strangers comments are the least of my problems! ha.

On the plus side, i weigh less now than i did when i got pregnant with my DD, so i suppose this helps my mind set- and in my opinion that's all it is-how you feel about yourself.

Good luck to you to.

Lady Thompson - thanks for your kind message. I am actually feeling much much better now - all of the messages have cheered me up. As I suspected, I think I was a bit hormonal and getting things out of perspective - was also worrying about the baby being big for dates which was my main concern rather than what I looked like if you see what I mean.

From what everyone has said, it sounds like the 2 stone thing isn't very realistic (maybe I got it totally wrong) and I will stop worrying about it (while keeping on eating healthily) and no doubt next week will be worrying about something else .

Hope all goes well with your pregnancy

Oh my goodness - I put on 10kg in water during the first trimester alone! My mother was exactly the same and had put on 1 stone by 10 weeks, in fact it was my newly inflated, ever so painful, sumowrestler arms that tipped me off that I was pregnant. Now 15 weeks and dreading my next weigh in although it feels like some of the fluid has gone down a bit but bump is definitely growing. My mum also said that she put on most weight in her 1st and 2nd trimesters rather than the 3rd.

PregnantandGrumpy - I could've written your first post. I'm nearly 34 weeks and last jumped on the scales a few weeks ago - it was 13kg I think. I'm not getting on them again until I go in to labour - I'd like to know what the "top weight" is so I can tell myself "well done girl, you've lost 15/20/164 kg!"

I know the buggering books say you should put on less if you start off heavier - but early on in my pregnancy and actually still mornings now, I need to eat. If I don't - my little boy makes me puke.

I've got friends who've (in secret) told me they put on as much as 6 stone - but you only seem to read about the ones on here who say things like "ohmygod I've put on 6lbs I'm such a fucking elephant!"

You'll be fine - and soon enough you'll be able to start enjoying exercise again. What are we supposed to do right now? I'm eating "healthily" and I'll be damned if I'm going to restrict my calories - sure, the baby will take what he needs from me but I've no desire to encourage my teeth to fall out or an early onset of osteoporosis thank you very much! My hip hurts so I can't walk more than half a mile.

As for "big for dates" - my lad is coming in at around a week big. My midwives aren't bothered by this at all - just have suggested I may get to meet him a week earlier than originally thought. No problems here with diabetes/blood pressure or anything else. It's a healthy pregnancy.

Enjoy yours.

Whitney Houston went from 7 stone to 14 stone during her pregnancy - I wonder if her $500/hr doctors told her she was a "bad person"?

Habbibu · 07/06/2010 15:52

I was weighed by a bonkers midwife at 34 weeks. She calculated my BMI (!), and then sucked her teeth and looked all stressy. Bear in mind we'd already lost our first wee girl, and were incredibly stressed, so I burst into tears - at which point she said "Why are you crying?"...

Thankfully, on leaving the room, we ran into our consultant in the waiting room - he asked how I was, and I wailed "I'm HUGE!". He rolled his eyes, took my chart, looked, said "You're big because you're having a big baby. Go home and put your feet up."

And he was right! She was 10lb 11oz, 53cm long and fit as a fiddle. She's now a very healthy tall 3.8 yo, and her wee brother was also a respectable 9lb 1.

Relax, take it easy, carry on eating healthily and look forward to walking with your beautiful baby to show off!

Thank you for this thread, it has made me feel better and I didn't really realise how worried I was!

christina1971 · 07/06/2010 17:35

Don't worry, Pregnantandgrumpy! I had put on the same amount as you at 32 weeks, and then only put on 1 or 2 kilos in the last weeks - not that it's excessive anyway! I was just made to feel it was a bit self-indulgent.
I live in France, and everybody commented on my "huge" bump- even strangers in the street!! French women seem to have really dinky ones.
Your baby may be quite big - or not - and you will lose loads probably with the birth. I was 9 kilos lighter a week later. Not that it matters, but somehow it gets to you.

I think the 12.5kgs as a maximum is unrealistic; all the books I've read have said that if you're an average weight before you are pregnant you're likely to put on roughly 15kgs (it might have been "12-15kgs")... if you are slightly underweight you'll put on more, and if you're overweight you'll put on less. I am 31 weeks and have put on 10.2kgs, but I've only put on 1.1kgs in the past three weeks. I've also read that most women put on the most weight on the second trimester; in the final trimester it's pretty much all baby - everything beforehand is your body preparing so extra blood volume, boobs, uterus etc.

Congratulations and enjoy the final weeks of your pregnancy!

oliviasmama · 08/06/2010 06:55

At the time I went into hospital to have DD I'd put on a mammoth 4 stone in weight .

I'd lost a stone as soon as she was born, the following 2 have come off over the last year and a half and the last one I am dieting off now.

I was always way off the "guide lines" at the docs and hospital.

Don't worry and good luck.

oliviasmama · 08/06/2010 06:56

oh and she was a very dainty 7.5 lbs at birth

WeesaD · 15/11/2010 21:53

I'm 15 weeks and have gained aboutt 11 lbs so far.
What is upsetting me is that it is all in the hips and thighs- I have a tiny bump!Shock

I don't mind the bump, it's the 'two pigs fighting under a blanket' look that I am struggling with..........:(

Littlemisskiwi · 16/11/2010 04:20

Hi

I think I must have put on about 25+kg in my first pregnancy. I never weighed myself towards the end but even 4 weeks after having bubs I was still 20kg heavier than before. I was stressed about this but really its the least of worries you could have with a new baby.

You put on what you and your baby need you to put on.

A time will come to loose it again, if thats appropriate. I've lost quite a lot and am happy with how I am.

I hope you feel better now, as your post was in June, so you must have had your baby. Good lcuk to you.

JBrd · 16/11/2010 14:30

I'm 15 weeks and have already put on about 10kg! Gone up 1-2 dress sizes, it's depressing.
But on the other hand - eating is the only thing that keeps the sickness at bay, and I'd rather not be sick, thank you very much!

I think it's probably harder when it's your first pg - it is the first for me, and nothing could have prepared me for how it actually feels to go through all these changes. I got very stressed and depressed about the weight gain at one point, now I'm trying to relax, go with the flow and enjoy, thinking that as long as I eat healthily and keep exercising, it can't be that bad. Every pregnancy is different, isn't it!
