substitutes for wine...?

OK, so I'm starting to miss wine. Anyone got anything that they enjoy as much?
I have been having Shloer in a wine glass, and actually, it is much more satisfying than in a normal glass!
Also, asda have a sparkling red grape drink which is just like fizzy red wine - much more like wine than the red grape Shloer.

Also, just for the record, Becks alcohol-free is pretty drinkable, if it's beer you're missing.
Any other non-alcoholic beer or wine is dreadful.

I know, lucybrad. That's why I started this thread, in the desperate hope someone coul suggest something new to try. Have been told our local morrisons stock non-alc kopparberg, so will get some in the next day or two.
I went to sains today, to try to get the mojito thing, but I couldn't find it :-(
But hnestly, everything does taste better from a nice wine glass, oddly!

Will add my support to havingkittens post - just ordered some wine from LoNo and the sparkling ones aren't bad - pleasantly surprised! Almost like champagne itself nymphadora!

Also agree that Becks alcohol free beer is the best!

nagoo · 07/06/2010 21:40

I love the cobra alcohol free beer, I found the Becks one undrinkable and revolting!

I haven't had the stomach for wine

Ba8y1 · 07/06/2010 22:01

Totally agree with havingkittens - just ordered some wine from LoNo and the sparkling ones do actually taste quite good -pleasantly surprised - almost like proper champagne nymphadora!!

And becks no alcohol beer is yummy!

Ba8y1 · 07/06/2010 22:04

Have just realised I did actually post my intended post half an hour ago! I just couldn't find it on the other page.... oops
... though think my english was better in the first one...

All those non-alcoholic bubbles have addled the brain...'hic' !!

I've found that ginger ale based mocktails are pretty good as the ginger ale has a dryness to it reminiscent of wine. Ginger ale with orange juice tastes a lot like Bucks Fizz.

I also managed to invent fake Pimms at my birthday last month. I think it was:

Vimto cordial
Touch of lime cordial
Ginger ale
Lemonade
tiny bit of Creme de Menthe (made a whole jug so basically alcohol free at that dilution)

Something like that anyway!

cosysocks · 08/06/2010 10:01

My drink of choice through pregnancy was orange and cranberry juice with a lime wedge... perfect for summer.

comtessa · 08/06/2010 13:49

Lime and soda. Obviously doesn't taste like wine but it's a nice non-sweet option. Alternatively, just have a very small glass of wine. Now I'm in second trimester, I've had in total: one glass of champagne at a wedding, one very weak Pimms and lemonade (lemonade - dash of Pimms) at a picnic and a sherry glass over red wine over dinner at a friend's. It's really the taste I miss, so I'll have some, but a really, really tiny amount and only ever with food.

So I've just been to Asda and found Cobra alcohol-free and Kopparberg alc-free pear cider - I will report back soon!

Thanks for the advice ladies I've been going for Schloer and M&S do a nice elderflower sparlkling drink with you can get 2 of in place of the wine in a meal deal. Although I do tend to feel dehydrated after these kinds of carbonated drinks.
My mum drank through her pregnancy with me and I am fine (some may argue that )but no one knew of foetal alcohol syndrome then and it is really the extreme alcohol intake for it but I won't be taking any chances!

sassy34264 · 09/06/2010 15:57

I'm not really a wine drinker. I can drink it, but to me it tastes better with lemonade in it!!!! (probably sacriledge to some of you)

I do like cognac and diet coke though- gorgeous. Not to sound too smug but i've not missed it all that much. I hadn't even thought to try a substitute likey. I've just over dosed on the chocolate.

NorkyButNice · 09/06/2010 16:12

I'd managed to convince myself that tonic water, lime and ice tasted exactly the same as a G&T until I had an accidental sip of DH's the other day - it's not the same but is still very refreshing and tasty!

Once a week I'm treating myself to a tonic water with the tiniest splash of white wine in it - yum. I'm 35 weeks now though and didn't start this till I was into the 3rd trimester (felt too sick before!).

biscuitbear · 09/06/2010 16:22

I have also bought some LoNo wine which arrived today!
I'll try it tonight - I'm very excited about it.

Also, I remembered my Italian relatives drink water with a splash of wine in on hot days. Might get me thru' the summer.

comtessa · 09/06/2010 17:05

Ooh! And also, at uni I used to drink v.cheap red wine with cranberry juice in. Very fruity wine, so could do cranberry juice with little bit of wine?
Also, there are low-alcohol wines - wine must, they called. Alcohol is 4%. So one small glass of that would be like having the alcohol equivalent of a half lager shandy.

fifitot · 09/06/2010 17:11

M and S do some non-alc wine stuff, different types. Have never tried them though.

I think the Becks is nice as a bear too.

fifitot · 09/06/2010 17:12

Beer

jazzandh · 09/06/2010 19:00

I sometimes drink the non-alcoholic red wine with tonic and ice. Tastes sangria(ish). The tonic drys out the sweetness of the "wine"!

Very refreshing.

vickrick · 09/06/2010 22:27

Marks & Spencer do a small range of non-alcoholic wine and beer which is nice but nothing like the real thing. I like Dandelion & Burdock at the minute and lime and soda. Might look into that non-alcoholic cider tho now the weather's getting nice
