Hi ladies got a bfp on bank holiday monday. however it wasn't planned so my sugar levels haven't been perfect and i haven't been taking folic acid. Since i found out tho have been doing everything right and my sugar levels are perfect but am wondering if there's any diabetic ladies out there who've gone through a pregnancy. What should i be doing/not doing? Anything i need to look out. Am seeing the early pregnancy unit on tues but in the meantime any eexperience or advise you can offer would be greatly appreciated

mrs gangly or any other ladies in the know........... Am struggling a bit with my sugars this week and could do with soem help and advice. Initially it appeared that my insulin needs had gone up and I have increased my lantus from 22 to 30 units and I was managing to keep things fairly level with just a couple of 8.somethings if I'd eaten a big evening meal. However this week my needs seem to have taken a massive drop and I've had at least one hypo everyday. They aren't too severe (I can deal with them by myself) and my symptoms are still noticeable, although its getting a little lower than it would usually before I feel it. Am monitoring my levels every couple of hours and eating something if need be. BF seems to thinks its cos baby will be taking more nutrients out of the food I'm eating so I need less insulin. Is this right? And are frequent mild hypos dangerous for bean? xx

First off mild hypos won't harm the bean! Yes, pregnancy with type 1 can be a challenge! Do you think maybe you've increased the Lantus a bit too much for now? Maybe drop back on that and increase your bolus ratios instead? The baby may be taking nutrients, but not directly sucking the sugar out so don't think this theory works, otherwise it wouldn't be the case that insulin goes up through pregnancy (although at times it can go down a bit again as you've found!)

One more thought, do you take your Lantus in one shot? Maybe you could consider splitting it into two - am and pm, I found this made it more controllable for me as I could then adjust the dose more easily. (yet another shot I know but only a for a few months!)
