Its doing my head in, have taken to absentmindedly massaging lower rib on my RHS all the time. Im 28 weeks and its been like this forever. At acquanatal they said baby pushes ribs up and out causing rib ache - just wondered if anyone else was havng this minor but annoying symptom?

I've got this at the moment but it's due to being booted in the ribs by my stroppy toddler, I'm in agony!

I did have it while pregnany though, one side, just underneath my boob. Was a trapped nerve apparently and it was agony.

A different bra helped (or just not bothering to wear one , have you been measured recently?

God yes. I'm 29 and I've had it for the last few weeks but recently it's intensified and by the evening I'm in agony. Midwife said it's baby position / rib stuff and not much to be done. Her advice was get a ball to sit upright on and also to lean over to take pressure off whatever is causing rib pain Anything on all fours helps. And conversely avoid slouching and being sort of crumpled as it squishes everything. I've got a pillow from Argos which helps at night and I try to move and sit upright and get on all fours when I can. Not practical at work but good to be aware of. Also they said don't be a martyr to the pain take paracetomol if it's really bad.

thanks margherita, probably is partly to do with my terrible posture and slumped over laptop at work as well as baby position. Ill try the all fours thing now (another friend told me about this - you just reminded me). As for bras thats a good suggestion too Jareth - every little helps with this non stop ache - its not the worst thing in the world but its doing my head in! I just wanted company with the having of a mystery ache

I totally understand. It's really uncomfortable, painful in fact. And all day it seems. I'm interested to know if anyone else had this and if it ever goes!

erm, don't want to be a worry-monger, but just check that you haven't got any other signs of pre-eclampsia? Pain under the ribs (on the right side, I think) can be linked to this. Other signs are high bp, protein in wee, headaches, er.... can't remember any more, but might be worth checking?

HelenaCC · 09/06/2010 15:06

Thanks HobbitMama, Ive just been for midwife appt so sure they will tell me if I have pre-eclampsia. I spoke to a physiotherapist about it and her main recommendation was to stetch up on the side the rib pain was on and breathe deeply to stretch out the rib cage.

Have also had this on the right side since about 12 weeks. Am now 24 weeks and it doesn't seem to have got any worse. Yet!! Have tried all sorts of postural stuff and stretching and it doesn't make any difference to me. But do agree that for some reason not wearing a bra seems to help. Asked doctor about it - she prodded me in the liver and when I said the prodding didn't hurt, that the pain was in the actual rib, she lost all interest. Yet another one of those lovely pregnancy treats we get to enjoy .

Hi there, I've had this pain, (underneath right lower rib) with both my prenancies, and both times its been identified by the doctor as an aggrevated gall bladder. It goes away as soon as the baby is born, and the way to help stop it is to follow a really low fat diet (which can be hard!!).

Not sure if this is what you have...but worth mentioning it to doc...?

cardamomginger · 09/06/2010 15:50

Can't be an aggravated gall bladder for me - had mine out about 6 years ago.

ChickenNugget · 09/06/2010 15:59

ooh.. I have this too. glad I'm not alone. am 33+2 now. slouching definitely makes it worse and sitting on a ball helps. its worst in the evening for me and the only way i have of dealing with it now when it gets bad is to just go to bed and to sleep!

margherita76 · 09/06/2010 17:06

Mine is on the left side. And I have to say the less I slouch the better it seems to be. Though all I want to do right now is slouch on a sofa. And I'd forgotten this but the midwife also suggested arnica.
