19+5 and already looking huge - Is this normal?

My bump is already quite big. Indeed everyone who sees me comments on this and when I say I am only half way through my pregnancy they say stuff like 'where is this going to end'.

I am starting to get a bit stressed about my size. Don't get me wrong I love my bump but I am starting to dread how big I will become and will I be able to manage it.

I was a size 8 pre pg and I am 163 cm.

This does not seem to be normal. Most women appers to say that they wish they had a bump at all at this stage.

Am I stressing for nothing? Is anyone else feeling/looking huge?

It's normal for smaller, slimmer women to show more, as they don't have any 'fat' to hide the bump.

What does your midwife say?

Many people make inane comments about the size of pregnant women, mostly they should be ignored.

Saartjie · 04/06/2010 09:49

Hi belgo. Went to see midwife last Friday and she measured my bump then and said it was ok so I was reassured then. However since then I have had some more unwelcome comments which is why my mind has started raising again.

Have 20 week scan on Wed so hoping that I will get more reassurance then.

I was just about to post a similar question! I'm 21 weeks and have a big bump now, it suddenly popped out at about week 19. My breasts have also grown. The rest of me is exactly the same size as pre-pregnancy ('helped' by weight loss due to severe morning sickness in the first 3 months). I've stayed healthy and exercising etc so my arms and legs are still toned.

I feel a bit embarrassed saying I'm only 5 months to people! But what worries me more is how much bigger the bump will get? If it is big now does that mean it will be big (relative to other people's) by the end? Like saartjie I'm starting to dread how big I might be.

I'm not totally surprised as i'm 5'4 and have quite long legs, so a shortish torso. But it is bothering me slightly now, just because I look quite pregnant already. And whilst I laugh off the comments and know it is only people making conversation and being excited for me, sometimes they niggle a little.

MadameG · 04/06/2010 10:22

Hello, I'm 25 weeks and I'm gigantic too! I look like I'm more like 35 weeks pregnant. My bump has been huge for the start, but it just works that way for some people, depending on muscle mass, body type etc.

I weighed myself today and I've only put on 4-5 lb since before the pregnancy (WTF) but the bump is indeed huge.

Don't worry at all.

Poppet45 · 04/06/2010 10:57

I was the same when I was pregnant. I too am small and the other women at my antenatal yoga class actually termed it the comedy bump it was so ridiculous.
I personally believe that bump shape varies quite strongly with the sex of the baby and everyone said mine - sticking right out in front like a flatbed trailer was a classic boy shape. They were right.
I'll be honest the last three weeks of pregnancy weren't fun - my legs used to go numb at night because of the bump. But I was still very active - I did aquanatal and yoga the day before I gave birth. In hindsight I wished I'd put my feet up and had a nice doze instead
In the end we were fairly sure they got my dates wrong - they pushed my due date back two weeks at the 12 week scan, because DS's bowel was still outside his body so they said he couldn't be older than 10 weeks.
Yet when he arrived just two days after the new later due date, he was 9lb 6oz, no vernix left at all, peely and as the midwife said - obviously overbaked so my original due date was probably right. DS was also on the 98th centile for his height!
Anyway big babies are awesome - you don't have that terrifying birdlike frail stage, HVs don't fret if they don't gain weight fast enough, and they are ridiculously cute! And so long as they are in a good position I hear they are often easier to birth than littlies as gravity helps.
Good luck!

Saartjie · 04/06/2010 13:19

So nice to hear that there are others in the same position and I am not alone feeling like this. I guess it is right everyone is different. I did put on a bit of weight in my first three months due to not suffering from very much morning sickness, in fact I did not throw up once however I have hardly put on any weight since my 12 week scan.

My greatest concern is that I know that I will have to do an 11 hour flight in week 31 as we are moving abroad. I am not looking forward to that at all. I have nightmares about not fitting into the seat on the plane

Everyone keeps telling me that my bump indicates that I am carrying a girl. I am not sure if that is true but I hopefully we will find out on scan on Wed.

Despite feeling huge I hope everyone is feeling ok.

Haha! Sorry, but I'm 12 weeks and already looking very pregnant. This bump would be completely impossible to hide and I'm completely in maternity trousers and skirts except for stretchy leggings.

But despite that, I've only started putting on weight in the last week, so I'm actually under the guidance weight gain for the 1st trimester. So I don't think it's podge despite eating like a pig.

I have a back issue that means my tummy muscles are stretched anyway, which I think explains why I've popped so early. But everyone is different! I look about as pregnant now as my best friend did at 7 months gone.

Saartjie - if you can't afford to upgrade to business/club, I really really recommend at least upgrading to economy plus. The extra 4-6" of leg room you get will be invaluable. I flew to Seattle and back just before getting pregnant and I was so cramped in economy flying out (it's been years since I flew long haul) that I paid the extra (£50 or something like that) to upgrade to economy plus on the way and was so glad I did. In economy I couldn't get my bag out from under the seat without disturbing the person next to me!

undergroundernie · 04/06/2010 16:03

Hi,
Me too, I'm 25 weeks and my bump is massive, well - very localised but sticks out a mile out front. Everyone comments on it and I feel like a object of commedy which I hate. This is my third pg and it was the same the other two times, I should learn to just ignore everyone and get on with it but it really gets to me after a while. Its other women who comment most, particularly outside the school gates. I just smile and join in with the hilarity but inside i hate it. I have been diagnosed with polyhydramnios also which isn't helping. I keep worrying that I'm going to get bigger than last time and I thought that was my limit, hence i worry about premature labour. To reassure myself i keep thinking that as i have no new stretch marks yet I still have space to grow!

undergroundernie · 04/06/2010 16:05

Oh, I forget, we went on a long train journey this week for which I had booked table seats. I tried and tried to change them but as they were Advance tickets it was impossible. I was convinced I would not be able to fit but actually it was fine, there was plenty of room.

herjazz · 04/06/2010 16:19

Oh I'm the same. My mum got back from holday yesterday, looked me up and down and asked whether they'd offered me the test for gestational diabetes yet

LadySanders · 04/06/2010 16:24

ds1 and ds2 everyone kept telling me how enormous i was (i was also a small slim person pre preg), it got pretty irritating, turned out i was big because they were both enormous babies.

then 3rd pregnancy with dd, people kept commenting on how tiny i was and was i even sure i was preg etc. this was equally irritating... it's the only time people find it acceptable to comment randomly on someone else's weight. anyway dd was only 6lbs so that probably explained it...

MumNWLondon · 04/06/2010 16:24

You sounds like my SIL who had big bump at 20 weeks and huge bump at 30 weeks and totally massive bump at term.

Apparently normal in thin women.

She was 2 weeks late... (and it was a boy).

Jacksmybaby · 04/06/2010 16:32

Hi, just wanted to add - you might not end up huge and might not have a huge baby - some people just get bigger earlier on but then slow down at the later stages while others catch them up!

ihearttc · 04/06/2010 19:04

I completely agree with jacksmybaby. Im tiny (4ft 10) and usually a size 8 and when I was pregnant with DS1 I had an absolutely enormous bump. I actually had an appointment with a consultant to discuss a c-section and have a another scan because the mw's were concerned at how big bump was and they estimated that he was going to be about 8-9lb. As it happened I had DS at 36 weeks and didn't even get a chance to see consultant...DS weighed 4lb 15 so even if had have been cooked for another 4 weeks he'd have never reached 9lb so having a massive bump doesn't always mean huge baby!

Im now pregnant again (8 weeks) and am already feeling large...think its just much more noticeable when you are normally tiny.

deepblue · 05/06/2010 21:48

I think some women just carry their babies like this. I had a large bump very quickly with my DD but the growth slowed towards the end so although I still had a sizeable bump just before I gave birth it wasn't scarily large. I'm quite short and slim and I think there is nowhere else for the baby and associated extras to go but outwards. DD was 8lb2oz and on the 98th for height so a fair sized baby as well. I worked with a girl who barely had a bump at all and she got equally as many comments about her size as I did. You really can't win!

I'm now nearly 12 weeks with DC2 and basically having to hide out as my stomach is pretty difficult to conceal and we haven't told anyone yet.

kawaiiko · 05/06/2010 22:37

I'm nearly 20 weeks, and someone I haven't seen for a month looked at me today and said "Hmm, twins?" Definitely not!

I am not slim or short (5'7") but I do have a very short torso. Anyway, I'm just enjoying the bump and going with the flow! Lots of pg ladies at work and everyone looks very different.
