Running during pregnancy

No it's not me, I get short of breath just climbing the stairs. My chum saw a mutual acquaintance who is 29 weeks doing said vigorous exercise . How is this possible or right ?

I guess if she's been doing it all the way through?

I was a runner before pregnancy but during the first 3 months my boobs were just too painful, and then I would try to run between 12 - 14 weeks but I kept coming over faint and dizzy so I took that as a sign I should be on the sofa.....

I had hoped to keep up some decent exercise during pregnancy but it hasn't happened for me at all.

It's fine if she's done it before pregnancy. I was at the gym until a week before both my dc's arrived, including a few gentle minutes on the treadmill.

Paula Radcliffe is currently 20+ weeks and running 14 miles a day. Why don't you go and judge her?

TheBride · 02/06/2010 05:39

Skihorse- shut up. You are making me feel bad about sitting here on the sofa eating a kingcone

Paula is indeed a Goddess.

skihorse · 02/06/2010 06:08

Yeh... but on the plus side you probably don't poo in the street in front of TV cameras!

TheBride · 02/06/2010 07:15

That is very true!

japhrimel · 02/06/2010 08:20

It's fine to carry on doing exercise that you were doing before, even if you have to ease off a bit. But Paula Radcliffe at 80% is till going to run far more than I ever could, lol!

skihorse · 02/06/2010 08:45

Bah! I could run that far... if I had wheels... and an engine.

MtnBikeChick · 02/06/2010 08:47

I ran before I was pregnant and continued until about 2 weeks ago at 30 weeks, when it got a bit uncomfortable. It is fine to do it as long as you don't start anything new during pregnancy (i.e. you don't START running for the first time after getting pregnant or step up your training at that time) and as long as you feel well/enjoy it. I HATE it when people look at me like I am mad or doing something to harm my baby just because I have kept up an exercise regime during pregnancy (and I have definitely reduced my regime - I certainly don't everything I did before becoming PG). It is as bad as passing judgment on people because they are overweight or lazy.

japhrimel · 02/06/2010 08:57

Well if it were me staring at you, it'd be because I'm jealous! I don't run, but I did walk a lot (hiking with the dog) before getting pregnant and I've found it really dispiriting to have to cut this right back because I get dizzy now.

skihorse · 02/06/2010 08:58

I'm just in total awe of anyone who is able to have maintained any semblance of their prior exercise regime and didn't end up a quivering sobbing nauseous wreck on the couch.

I can't wait to get back to the gym! Get on my horse... go for a run, etc., etc.

I know it's cliche for women - but for all the judgers out there - wouldn't they have been the type to watch SATC? Even bloody anally-retentive Charlotte kept running!

Chynah · 02/06/2010 14:13

I ran til 36 weeks with DS and 34 weeks with DD. Both times I ran races up to 10 miles while pregnant (although at a gentler pace). I had very healthy pregnancies and managed to maintain quite a bit of fitness and started running again 5 weeks post CS both times.

Medical conditions aside, as long as you are fit and used to the exercise there is no reason to stop and you will naturally slow down the further your pregnancy progresses.

MadameCheese · 02/06/2010 14:21

Cor! This lass is indeed a runner anyway but apparently looked dreadful . I am sticking to my exercise regime

It's fine if you were already running before you were pregnant. I am now 32 weeks and I have only stoped running 3 weeks ago!!
