So, can you identify sex in scan at 15 weeks?

Went for my dating scan yesterday at 14+6 (yes, I'm always running late ) and dh and I both saw what looked like a very definite willy.

We didn't say anything but a fraction of a second later the sonographer (is that the right term?) said "If you thought you saw something between the legs, you didn't because the male and female genitals look the same at this stage"

All very well, but I have googled and some sources say you can tell at this gestation.

On the other hand she would have had no need to lie to us because we can find out the gender at the 20 week scan anyway if we want to. Which we don't btw, so no idea why I am obsessing over whether we saw a willy or not

Any experiences?

My sister had her first scan at 16+2 (she missed out a month somehow) and she found out the sex then. That's only 10 days later and it was very clear she said.

it was a consultant that did my 12 week scan... due to problems in previous pregnancy and he could tell at 12 weeks

but that said... he zoomed in and I couldnt have told you what he was showing me

A girl would be sort-of nice to balance out hte family, but another boy would be nice too.

I was told at 12 weeks but they said it's just an indication rather than a certainty. They were right though.

I had my dating scan at 13+6. I asked about gender and they said that until 16 weeks both male and female has bits that stick out and it was very difficult to determine gender at that point. Apparently both have sticking out bits but angle is slightly different....

I asked the sonographer (sp?) who scanned me at 15 weeks if she could tell the sex. She zoomed in on the baby's bits and said 'What do you think?', I said 'A boy' and she said 'Yup, I reckon so'. She was right!!

One of my friends is a consultant in Obstetrics. She told me that she can even tell the sex at 12 weeks, but it is, as ib says, less certain until things become a bit more obvious.

Thanks for all this info. I will be peering but not asking at the 20 week scan

I was told at my first scan at 16+3 that it looked like a girl. It was a brand new scanner and it looked really clear to me. At my second scan at 23+4 she said it looked like a girl but it looked less clear on this older scanner. I'm confused whether I can call the baby "she" or not. I've also heard they don't like to commit themselves to telling you a sex as some people have tried suing for a dowry when they've got it wrong!

Wallace · 02/06/2010 17:25

So we are having a very well endowed boy then?

I found out at my 12 week scan which was routine at the private clinic where I had my scan. Amazingly clear picture mind you so maybe it's down to how good the equipment is.

duejuly2010 · 02/06/2010 18:34

I went for a sexing scan at 16+1 and was def obviously a boy. Scans since have confirmed it was right

I found out at 12 weeks both times (at the Fetal Medicine Centre). The genitalia at this stage looks the same basically, and it's the angle between the genitalia and the body that indicates whether it's a boy or a girl. A lot depends on the skill of the sonographer in examining this however, and they are more likely to get it wrong before about 16 weeks. With my first pregnancy, the sonographer was happy to predict the sex, he had a great view and was very skilled in doing this, but the second time a different sonographer was more reluctant. They were right both times though!
