Is this SPD?

I am 32 weeks pregnant with my first baby and have been keeping fit and regularly exercising i.e. walking 4 - 5 miles a day at least 5 days a week since becoming pregnant. However, since about two weeks ago I have had a lot of pain in my left pelvis (very low down almost as if it is deep in the joint area). I have continued walking (albeit painfully) and I have read other threads where SPD has rendered people immobile so I am not sure if this is what I am suffering from. On my lunchtime walk today it was a bit like mini electric shocks being sent throughout my pelvic/pubic region and now when I get up from my desk at work it is a lot more painful. I seem to be able to sit cross legged at home and this doesn't seem to hurt but getting up from a chair/sofa and getting out of bed in the morning and now prolonged walking seems to really aggravate it. I am going to go swimming after work in the hope of soothing my joints...... what can I do to help and is this SPD but in a mild form oh and is it likely to get worse (although not sure I really want the answer to this last question)???? I seem to have had a pretty good pregnancy so far and so am just wondering if I am about to start paying for it!! Thank you in advance

Even though it's mild, I would still ask for a physio referral to keep on top of it.

i agree with japhrimel, the best thing to do is ask for a physio referral. I had mild spd with dc2 but actually needed physio postnatally, whereas with dc1 I had worse spd but everything went back to normal pretty quick.Sitting crosslegged may aggravate it, try sitting on a gymball, it's easy to get up off and good for your pelvic floor and posture.Swimming is good but not breaststroke. If it is spd then it doesn't work like other aches and pains I have had, you can't walk it off and rest rather than keeping moving improves it.

If you like swimming on your front (and I'm not sure swimming on your back works with a bump!), breaststroke arms are of course okay - just keep your legs straight!

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 02/06/2010 09:11

It sounds like it could be.

Get a physio referral asap.

I would minimise your walking. Swim gently, but definitely not brest stroke.

Start gettin in and out of bed, and the car keeping your legs together, try to avoid crossing your legs. Sit down as much as you can, but not fot too long at a time.

Good luck, I hope it doesn't deteriorate any further.

By crosslegged I thought twittle meant some sort of lotus, which my yoga teacher advised me against when pg (softening ligaments make it too easy to over do it) but Iwish is right, you shouldn't even sit with one leg over the other, it does aggravate it.

Twittle · 02/06/2010 09:59

Thank you all, I did mean I had been more in a lotus position rather than with just my legs crossed (although I have to say that I do normally sit at my desk with legs crossed too not good I know. Had a bad night last night, couldn't turn over onto my left side as the pain was a searing/burning type of pain. I went swimming last night and I have to say that breastroke hurt less when I was doing it than when I swam holding a float and just kicked my legs, although when I got out of the pool it was very painful to walk on.

Thank you for your replies and help it's really getting me down as I am normally very active but it doesn't seem like I will ever be without this pain now. I have just left a message for a friend who is a physio and will make an appointment to see my doctor if she doesn't get back to me.
Thanks again.

OK, if it's hurting to turn over in bed, you need to get some silky/satin pj's and/or sheets! It might not be your usual choice of attire, but it saves you from having to lift up your bum to turn over, you just slide - much more comfortable!

Also start sleeping with a pillow between your knees - not great in hot weather, but far less painful.

Can you swap your swim for a wallow instead? It sounds likeyou've had a very active pregnancy up until now, but you really, really don't want to be doing anything that might aggravate your pain unless it's completely unavoidable.

Re: the physio - ideally you should see a physio who specialises in womens health. Your GP or midwife can refer you. Ask for it to be marked urgent as it sounds as if your symptoms are progressing at a pace.

Thank you IWIWMO I have just made an appointment to see the doctor this evening so fingers crossed I can see a physio who can help me soon. I have been trying to sleep with a pillow in between my legs so will continue that and will look into the silky pj's, DH might wonder whats going on if I get silk sheets but the way I'm feeling at the moment I will do anything to make things easier - 8 weeks to go is seeming like an awful long time if this continues or gets worse. I think the problem is that it has been niggling for the past couple of weeks but I have just kept on walking and swimming in the hope that I will shake it off - seems like I could have done the opposite and made it a lot worse!

I know exactly what you're going through- I've got pelvic girdle pain and for a couple of weeks was completely immobile. After some rest I've regained some mobility, but struggle to sleep because I can't turn over properly. Do ask to see an obstetric physio- I was initially referred to a normal physio and felt that was a waste of time. The obstetric physio knew exactly what to look out for, and gave me a pelvic brace and crutches.

Twittle · 03/06/2010 09:58

Thank you MissyM, GP was helpfulish although no diagnosis but she is referring me to a physio. I have also got the number from a physio friend of a physio dealing in obstetrics and so have left a message for her in the hope that I can get an appointment sooner rather than later! Had my breakfast sitting on my yoga ball which was much more comfortable than a chair - just a shame I can't bring it to work with me!!!

Thanks again everyone for replying to this thread it's been really helpful and definitely eases some of the worries!
