I know I sound really dim, but I have never had heartburn before so haven't a clue what it feels like.

Last night I woke up with burning like pain at the top of my bump (just below breast), could this have been heartburn? Hope it's not a sign of things to come as it was pretty unpleasant . If it is heartburn is there anything I can take for it? Like I said never suffered with it before so don't know what medication if this is any are out there. Also pain went after about an hour and no signs of anything now.

Thank you in a advance

You can take rennie to begin with (not the sugar free ones though) or Gaviscon and if that doesn't work you can take ranatadine (Zantac).

Renatadine isn't licenced for pregnant women but if you went to your doctors because the rennie wasn't enough then that is what they'd prescribe.

There is a notch up from that too, although I can't remember, but you'll definately need to get that from your GP.

And yes, that sounds like heartburn. You can try sleeping a little elevated too. How many weeks are you?

nunnie · 31/05/2010 10:45

I am 18+5 weeks.
Never had it with DD. I will buy some rennie and gaviscon and hope that I get one of those to work if it happens again. Thank you.

As always, check with the pharmacist first.

Sleeping more upright can help, as can avoiding spicy foods, big meals, very cold or very hot food or drink and gulping drinks down.

Next time, get a prescription for it, so u get it free!

nunnie · 31/05/2010 19:15

I checked with pharmacist in boots and was given rennies, and told to see GP, if they don't work.

Will get prescription then, I forgot all about the free prescription thing .

Thank you for all your help.

Yogurt or cold milk helps me out.
Sometimes even water makes me more comfortable.
Deff more pillows so I am higher up than my tummy.

Burning in the top of your belly sounds wrong though - heartburn is usually around the top of your chest and bottom of your oesophagus(where your stomach and stomach acids have been squashed up to, iyswim).

differentnameforthis · 01/06/2010 02:44

The type of pain you have described could be heartburn, however, seeing as you said it was at the top of your bump, please think about being checked over.

heartburn like pain at the top of bump can be Epigastric Pain

If it is epigastric pain, heartburn meds won't work.

nunnie · 01/06/2010 07:39

Ohh thank you, I had my urine checked 2 weeks ago and it was fine. Can this happen suddenly do you know?

I have stupidly long legs and a freaky short body, so the top of my bump is just below my breast bon. The pain did appear to be a burning pain.
The pain was more inbetween ribs towards the top (breastbone), so maybe just above my bump rather than right on it.

Reading that thread it also said it was very very rare to get it from 20 weeks onwards, it usually occurs in latter stages of pregnancy. I am only 18 weeks, 19 on thursday.

Hasn't happened again thank goodness, does anyone know if Epigastric Pain happens regularly or not?

Sorry for all the questions, I haven't heard of this before .

Thank you for advice, and thank you in advance for any further help you can give me.

Epigastric pain doesn't go away, it signifies liver damage, so chances are, if your pain went with a heartburn remedy, it was heartburn.

The fact that your urine was clear 2 weeks is good. I am sure you just had heartburn, as it seems the pain has gone?

I was trying to alarm you, but it seems little is know about epigastric pain & I was just wanting you to be aware of it, incase the heartburn didn't ever subside.

differentnameforthis · 01/06/2010 08:15

I wasn't trying to alarm you

nunnie · 01/06/2010 12:41

No it's good to know, as like I said I have never heard of this before.

The pain went after about an hour without any remedy at all, just alot of fidgiting, trying to find a position that eased it.

Thank you for the advice differentnamefor this. Someone reading this may well need the information you have given so it is always helpful to have all angles covered when it comes to pregnancy.

If it went with fidgeting/no remedies, could have been trapped wind.

Glad it went, doesn't seem to be anything to be too alarmed about!
