How dangerous is exposure to chickenpox at thevery end of a pregnancy. In a non-immune mother of course. And if she is infected what can be done ?

I think you have to act fairly fast (within 96 hours of exposure) and get hold of a doctor or hospital if you are 36 weeks +

This depends on how close to term you are and level of exposure. Regardless of stage of pregnancy, you (but not necessarily baby) are at greater risk of complications if catch it. Anti-virals can be given. You should discuss with informed midwife/doctor today. (and get vaccinated after baby is born! Chickenpox in adulthood is not good, pregnant or not)

Prettycandles, it can be serious for the baby if it is born while the mum has active chicken pox. This happened to one of my best friends the spots appeared at 40 weeks, she ended up admitted to an infectious diseases unit on intravenous acyclovir for 48 hours.
Luckily she did not deliver til term+10 and her LO was fine.
If you are not immune and have been exposed speak to a registrar or higher grade at your maternity unit.
Am a midwife btw.

It's fine, thanks. I've finally managed to contact the heavily pg friend-of-a-friend that my spotty ds cuddled up to the day before he came out in spots, and she's immune. Phew.
