Confused, really confused

Hello - am new on here and this is my first post!!!

I believe I am pregnant (can you tell it's my first ) but its a bit of a long story that has got me all confused!

I have PCOS and have had difficulty with insulin resistance, putting on weight and in the end stopped having periods altogether. I was taken off the pill due to my weight and hormone issues. I went to see a specialist a few months ago who told me that as I wasn't ovulating I wouldn't be able to get pregnant without significant medical interventions.

We knew we wanted to try, but I was told that as I was overwight they couldn't do anything till I lost some. I went away and started on a healthy eating and exericse regime - but things have been going very slowly.

So about 6 weeks ago I start to feel really sick - very nervous stomach, loose bowels, being sick on occasion, and generally feeling like I wasn't digesting food - having awful acid and indigestion. I went to the Docs who told me I had Gastritis (sp!) and put me on some tablets. Meanwhile symptoms continued.

Move on to last week - my mother made a joke abot morning sickness, as I was only really getting sick on an empty stomach, and it got me thinking. Did a test and it said positive - did another 4 and they all said the same thing - imagine my surprise!!!

Booked an appointment at the doctor last Friday, I don't know what I was expecting - maybe for them to do a test or something, or at least examine me. All she said was, well if the test from boots says you are then you are!

So I asked whether my PCOS hormone issues may give a false positive and she said no and sent me on my way, promising to refer me to the hospital for a scan as there is no way to tell how far gone I am.

So I am now waiting for a scan appointment. Since I have done these tests I have started to have stomache cramps and wierd pains, as well as a dull ache sometimes in my hips and lower back - but I am worried I am imagining it all, trying to convince myself I am pregnant.

I don't know what to do! They told me I wouldn't get pregnant, then they tell me I have a stomach flu, and then they tell me I am pregnant without doing an examination!!!!

I feel like I am in limbo! I don't have a scan appointment and will have to wait at least 2 weeks!

Sorry it was so long - anyone got any thoughts.

As I understand it the tests are so reliable that there is no need for any examination so you must be pregnant, congratulations. Dont have any idea about hurrying up the scan though sorry

MrsGangly · 26/05/2010 18:17

It's certainly possible to get pregnant with PCOS, although lots of people have problems, so congratulations!

The pregnancy tests are all really reliable so if they say you are pregnant, you really are!

I got lots of vague stretchy pains when I was first pregnant too. To be honest, I was really surprised at all the weird pains given that I was so newly pregnant!

Obviously, if they are not just mild or they get worse, see your doctor, but hopefully all will be wonderfully well for your scan in a fortnight.

Hi, just to reassure you that with all 3 of my pregnancies I have never been examined- they always go on the test. It's very rare to have a false positive- especially 4!!! So, I'd say congratulations are in order!

megonthemoon · 26/05/2010 18:20

I'd say congratulations are needed too

I was diagnosed with PCOS about 8 years ago and have had weight and period issues ever since, but it didn't actually affect my ability to conceive!

The tests are so good they don't bother doing anything more - it is weird as they just leave you to get on with it until the scan, and it is a bit disconcerting!

Ineedsomesleep · 26/05/2010 18:21

Congratulations. Hope you get your scan appointment soon and also, don't forget to take your folic acid.

giantpurplepeopleeater · 26/05/2010 18:24

Thanks guys - you are all managing to calm me down!!!

I really thought that some sort of examination was involved - I guess because the only person I have to talk to at the moment is my Mom who was last pregnant nearly 30 years ago - so I don't have much recent experience to go on!!

Megonthemoon - I think you have it exactly right. I expected something would happen but I have just been left to it while I wait to here about the scan. It realy is disconcerting. Since finding out I seem to be checking the internet every day to see if things I am experiencing are normal!!!

Thanks for all your replies everyone.

CONGRATULATIONS!!

All your symptoms sound exactly like mine, I'm 11 weeks now.

It is a bit weird that nothing really happens with the GP, it's a bit of a wait until you have a scan so feels like it's imaginary!!

Hope you get the scan soon so you'll know how far along you are. But in the meantime, welcome to Mumsnet and congrats!!

xxxxxxxx

First of all, congratulations, and as Ineedsomesleep said, start on the folic acid right away!

I am actually an Embryologist and I work in an IVF clinic (and also happen to be 16 weeks pregnant) and I have to say that your situation isnt rare at all.

We often see PCOS women who are not ovulating/not ovulating reguarly and they do sometimes fall pregnant naturally before their treatment cycle commences.

Indeed, the very same thing happned to my sister. PCOS, weight problems, not ovulating and they told her she would need ovarian drilling (severe last resort) if she ever wanted to fall pregnant. A week before her appointment at the hospital, she found out she was pregnant naturally!

As for the examination thing, same happened to me when i saw the doctor after my positive test. Was just sent away and told that a home test is sufficient. And this is right. At this early stage (if you are early on) and examination will not give the doctor any information.

You have 3 options really:

  1. You could have a private scan at a clinc if you dont want to wait the 2 weeks. You'd have to pay of course. We reguarly scan naturally pregnant women who dont want to wait for NHS appointments
  2. Ask if you can have a quantitative beta hCG blood test. Depending on the level of hCG hormone in your blood, they can estimate whether the pregnancy is viable and roughly how far along you are. Some doctors do this, or agian, you could pop along to a clinc and do it privately. It would be a quicker option.
  3. Just be patient and think positive (which I know from experience is very hard)

And as for pains...I had the same. Funny pains in pelvis, abdomen and lower back. This is normal as everything is moving/stretching ready to accommodate lil baby.

Let us know how you get on!

Honeybee79 · 27/05/2010 11:37

Congrats! Those tests are very reliable so if they are giving a positive result then you're pregnant! I also have PCOS and we were told that we would need IVF - 2 months later I was pregnant and totally shocked.

japhrimel · 27/05/2010 11:43

As everyone said, the tests are very accurate, so most doctors are happy with you having tested yourself. It's only specific fertility hormone supplements that can give a false positive, so if 4 tests were positive, you're definitely pregnant!

Getting pregnant with PCOS can be a lot harder, especially without help, as you may only be ovulating once or twice a year. But if you catch that one egg, that's enough!

watersprite · 27/05/2010 13:15

Hi,

Congratulations! I'm 22 weeks pregnant and have a seven year old I was told I wouldn't beable to concieve as I have endometriosis which has caused very bad scar tissue.

I took 5 tests and each confirmed that I was pregnent and you can imagine my suprise!

When I went to the doctors she just told me that the test were accurate and because each one came up positive then I must be. I know what you me though waiting for the scan seems to drag on!

As for the funny feelings I had exactly what you have discribed.
