Brown bleed/discharge wk 4-5 after PID - HELP!

Very new here and first time pregnant, I am at about 5 weeks. Doctor said 5 1/2 but since seeing her yesterday I have done a ClearBlue digital (this morning!) and must have had my dates of my last period a bit off as the result from the test suggested I am 4-5 weeks - this is after 4 regular line tests over the weekend (2 at doctor).

I am concerned because this morning I noticed a little browny blood (but it could have been discharge? As it was that sort of consistency, mixed with some clear as I wiped - sorry TMI!). I know this can be quite common but I had a severe episode (my first) of PID in March and obviously I have become pregnant very soon after this. I know for a fact my left fallopian tube was affected. I am really worried this could suggest the pregnancy is ectopic?

I have not had penetrative sex recently.

Please could anyone advise - I would be so grateful.

Brown blood can often be nothing. When the embryo implants in the lining of the womb you can have a little bleed and that is nothing to worry about.

However, you know one of your tubes is damaged, you are pregnant and you've had a little bit of bleeding. It would be entirely sensible for your GP to refer you for an early scan to put your mind at rest. Much better to get this cleared up now than to wait. Someone who is skilled at performing ultrasound scans can see an embryo in the uterus very early on - my last pg was seen at 4+4 and ectopic ruled out right away. So just get it checked, then you won't need to worry!

Oh, and congratulations. Hope it is all good news.

Thanks, Haliborange. I went to the doctor's yesterday after finding out about the pregnancy on Saturday morning, but I was pushed out of the doctor's room very quickly because it was an emergency appointment. She said she was referring me to a midwife to see if they will give me an early scan but my doctor's surgery is useless (I will change soon) - do you think it would be worth me ringing the hospital directly and asking if they have had my details referred, and pushing for a scan asap because of my circumstances? I don't know how long it takes for the referral to process...

I forgot to add before, I have not had any pain, apart from sort of slight cramping/stretching, but I have read this is normal.

Miamix, see if your hospital has an EPAU - Early Pregnancy Assessment Unit - which is normally where you should get referred for the scan. If your dr won't refer you and if self-referral isn't possible, you can get referred by going to A&E. No pain is a good sign but worth getting this checked. Good luck!

I would.
If you are in London you can walk in at St George's in Tooting.
It really shouldn't take long to get a referreal to an EPAU - it's a phone call or your GP hands you a letter to give when you get there IME.

Just checked again for blood and nothing now... I am probably being overcautious but it's my first and I just really don't know what to expect - I don't have any friends who are pregnant/have babies so I feel a bit lost to be honest!

I am in Brighton - I am being referred to Worthing hospital who do have an EPAU. They have an online self-referal form so I think I will fill that out now - sod whether the doctor has referred me or not - it wasn't my regular docotor and she just seemed to want me out of there as soon as possible so I don't know how they would even contact me (phone? post?) or anything like that.

Thanks so much for your replies

Give the hospital a ring and ask them what to do. They ought to see you to rule out ectopic given your medical history, I think.

miamix · 25/05/2010 10:35

Will do now - thanks.

Just to update on this, I phoned the hospital who have not had my referral details through yet, and advised me to phone the doctor. Phoned the doctor and they said they will put the referral through this afternoon DESPITE my appointment being yesterday morning and DESPITE having records of my medical history. They told me to phone the hospital at the end of the week.

I know I'm probably worrying unduly and I'm not the only person in the world who is going through this worry but their attitude is already frustrating me

And the hospital won't see you without a referral letter?
If they will accept your referral if you turn up with a letter in your hand can you pick a copy up from the GP and take it in?

Look, everything is almost certainly fine so try not to worry too much (easily said, I know). They just need to get you checked so you can rest easy. Having said that, when my GP was once this useless I asked them what they were going to say if I experienced a rupture and ended up having emergency surgery because they couldn't make a phonecall in a timely manner.

I got seen rather quickly after that...

miamix · 25/05/2010 15:12

Thanks

I think I am just being overcautious. I guess they know best - they must have referred loads of women so if anything really alarming happens I will go to A&E - everything else can just be explained away right now I think.

Right, well if you get any pain/bleeding (whatever colour) at all go straight to A&E and do get an early scan no matter what.

Take care.
